UFC Champ Ronda Rousey Wins 2014 ESPY for Best Female Athlete

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey on Wednesday night added another accolade to her ever-growing list: Best Female Athlete.
That latest honor was bestowed upon her at ESPN’s annual ESPY awards.
Rousey was up against the likes of skier Mikaela Shiffrin, and basketball players Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart in the Best Female Athlete category.
She was also nominated for Best Fighter alongside UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and boxers Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and Andre Ward. Mayweather took home the Best Fighter honor.
Rousey has been an athlete since childhood, and like her mother, emerged as one of the top female Judokas in the world. Rousey qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and then captured the bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Games.
She has come into her own as a mixed martial artist. After rocketing up the ranks to win the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight championship, Rousey was named the UFC’s inaugural champion when Strikeforce was folded into the UFC.
Rousey may have initially been handed the UFC gold, but has proved that it belongs wrapped around her waist by defending it four times.
She has finished every opponent she’s faced in her 10 professional MMA bouts. Of those 10 opponents, Rousey has finished nine of them inside the first round, including a recent 16-second destruction of Alexis Davis.
