Lot's of MMA Fans, many right here on this site have become quite blase about the use of PED's, to the point that they actually do not care about whether athletes are using them or not. They see the testing and subsequent punishments as something that prevents them from seeing the fights they want to see. (Just Bleed?)
Out of all sports I would argue that MMA practitioners gain a greater edge over their opponents via the use of PED's. Therefore the need to have punishments that act as an active deterrent must also be greater. If the prize outweighs the punishment, the punishment will be ignored; as it is in the current system.
I believe part of the reason why fans choose to condone or overlook cheating in their sport is due to the attitude of the UFC. The UFC are primarily a business - having suspended fighters and cancelling big fights is very bad for business. That is why they have repeatedly and for many years tried to brush the whole issue under the carpet. The problem is that as the sport grows, so does regulation - and that bulging carpet is growing...
So why not legalise PED's? Fuck it.
Because they are VERY bad for your health in manifold ways. As soon as you condone their use, you force all fighters to use them or else have an unsurpassable handicap. Forcing fighters to risk their health and wellbeing in order to be able to compete is obviously not the way to go.
The sport that is most comparable to MMA in gaining an edge via PED's is athletics (Track & Field) The punishment they hand out is 2 years for first offence. Lifetime ban for 2nd offence. In 2015 they are returning to a 4 YEAR BAN for first offence. (To cover an Olympic cycle)
So lets f*ck the UFC's lenient stance. Have tougher penalties, that deter cheating and protect the fighters health instead of the the UFC's bank balance - and move our beloved sport into the mainstream where it belongs.
Peace.
