This issue came up in another thread and I thought it was an important enough question to start a new thread about. I've always assumed that an EQ used in the sidechain of a compressor has no leakage into the main audio path and can't affect the tone or impart distortion to the main audio path. Another poster however, is convinced that the quality of the sidechain EQ does affect the tone and/or distortion of the main audio signal of the compressor. I've been wrong before about something I thought was set in stone so I'll leave it to others to settle this question one way or the other.
