Aurora GTC2 vs Tube Tech CL 2A vs ??? -- Go to for tracking and more

Looking for a go to flexible 2 channel dual mono AND stereo compressor for tracking but maybe can work for 2 bus as well.

Aurora GTC2 I've never heard in person but based on features seems very appealing. I'm a heavy user of the CL 1B but not the CL 2A, and a little concerned about loss of low end when pushed based on the CL 1B for drum busses (generally end up leaving the kick out of it).

Anything else, even 500 series I'd be open to as well.

Mostly will be used on vocals, electronic drums and synths, but some other standard sources as well (guitar, bass, horns, sitar, etc.)

I already own a pair of Retro Doublewides and an Elysia xpressor.

Thanks

Setting up Hardware compressor and EQ on MIC channel

Hi guys. I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to anywhere on this forum. So I decided to sign up and post this.

I'm trying to setup a hardware compressor and EQ to my MIC channel on my mixer, and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to do it properly. I managed to figure out how to get the compressor working with a Y cable... but how do I include the EQ in the chain? Attached is a picture of my setup and how its currently connected.

Guitar Pad Sound

I have recently noticed an interesting guitar sound often heard in Trent Reznor's music; NIN and David Fincher film scores. I call it a guitar pad, since it sustains for a long time without decaying, like a string patch from a synth.

Here are some examples of songs where this kind of sound is heard:

- Leaving Hope (from NIN, comes in at around the second or third verse)

- Perihelion (from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo)

- Intriguing Possibilities (from The Social Network - it's in the second chorus where the song picks up in a more powerful way)

Pro Tools 11.3.0 realtime bounce timing issue?

Also posted on duc.avid - reposting here in case someone at Gearslutz can help me resolve this more quickly:

I am having an issue with bouncing a track in real time in Pro Tools 11.3.0

I have heard of people experiencing weird things with OFFLINE bounce, but what is strange to me is when I bounce the track offline and import it back into the session, it actually aligns correctly.

However, when I bounce the same track, with the same timeline selection and everything, in realtime, it is exactly 6408 samples EARLY.

Basically, I am sending my vocal track to a bus, and bouncing that bus in Mono. Like I said, offline works fine, printing internally works fine, but realtime bounce ends up early, by quite a bit.

I have Delay Compensation on, and I thought this could be the cause, but bouncing without it causes the file to be late. Only by about 4 samples, but enough to cause serious phasing, and probably would be worse if I had more plugins on the track.

The 6408 samples just seems like a random number... The track with the highest delay in my session is 2877. And the track with the highest compensation is 5233. So where on earth is the 6408 sample discrepancy coming from on my realtime bounce?

Any help here? I'm hoping there aren't other weird timing issues when bouncing multiple tracks I just haven't noticed yet (for obvious reasons like phase accuracy between tracks, sends/AUXs, etc.)

Thanks.

Record 4 separate tracks with Steinberg UR44

Hello,

I'm gonna start recording my band at home and I need to buy an interface that could allow me to record the drums with 4 separate tracks (simultaneously) on Ableton Live. I was thinking of the Steinberg ur44 since it is on my budget, but I need to know if I can record 4 separate tracks on Ableton with this interface. A stereo mix-down of all the channels is not what I'm looking for. Sorry if it seems like an obvious question but I dont know that much about interfaces.

Thanks!!

Any patchbay orientation please??

Hi there, I've made a search around here and all over the net and I'm still having doubts about how to connect my gear to the patchbay.

I have the following hear:

- Akai eie pro (which I use as a mic pre, I don't have a mic pre). It has 4 mics inputs, 4 TRS outputs and 4 TRS insert jacks.

- I use reaper DAW.

- Tc electronics 2290 delay (it has 1 input and 2 outputs L&R)

- Tc electronics 1210 chorus/flanger (it has 2 inputs and 2 outputs)

- dbx 160a compressor (1 input and 1 output)

- lexicon PCM 90 with expanded memory for more fx (it has 2 inputs and 2 outputs)

I've send a question on Eie forum about how to add this external gear, and they suggested me to buy a patchbay.

I've read about the outs are on the top and the in are the bottom jacks. I've also understood about the three types of conection my patch bay has (normalled, half normalled and throu).

My question is how to connect all this gear to the patch bay.

My idea is to record my guitar tracks with some compression (dbx 160a) in a track (sometimes I want to compress a recorded track into another track for e.g. To add compression to the whole song). Then I want to run that track (dry only with compression), process it with my external fx gear and record it in another track.

They suggested me to connect the mic in the EIE input, outputs 1 and 2 to my studio monitors, dbx compressor into insert1 Jack; eie outputs 3&4 to external fx and then go back to EIE inputs 3&4. Create a bus in reaper to send the dry track to be processed by external fx units and record it in a wet track.

I'm a bit confused on how to connect all these gear in the right way to get the results into the patch bay (I could do it great without the patchbay, but it's not a flexible way.

I'll be really thanks if someone could help me.

Adrian

Need a DDA Profile power supply

I have a client/friend with a 56 input DDA Profile. We have upgraded Midas supplies running in parallel on it or at least we did. About a month ago one supply starting blowing fuses on the 120V input side. Tonight the second one started blowing fuses on the 15V side. We are tired of repairing them and he would like to purchase new supplies. Does anyone know of a company building new PSUs that might be adapted for the Profile. I saw an article in ProSound News a couple weeks ago, probably in a back issue, about a company building really nice new supplies for boards but I seem to have thrown that issue away. Thanks for any help you can give.

Line Audio 3cm with Babyface or Audient id22?

Hi,

I am classical guitarist and would like to record some own music for solo guitar

and later maybe a few pieces duo with cello. Some good quality demo.

I would really like a recording with very less noise because the pieces are very gentile and quiet. I would record it in a nice small quiet church.

I am searching for Audio Interface and 2 Mics. My budget is not very big 600€ for Interface and 400 for mics.

I can not decide between RME Babyface and Audient id22

with a pair of Oktava mk 012 or Line Audio cm3.

I like the sound of Line Audio cm3 but I am worry that non of those two Interfaces will have enough gain because of the low sensitivity of the mics ending up with a lot of noise.

Wich combination would you recomend:

Babyface - Line Audio

Babyface- Oktava

Audient- Line Audio

Audient- Oktava

or something different?

Which Interface has better preamps?

Thank you very much!

Best synths for experimental sounds... synths with endless possibilities

Obviously the easy answer would be modular.

But I am looking for something else.. the kind of synth that always seems to have new sounds inside of it. There are some synths that always seem to turn out the same sounds, even if they are good. They have limitations. And obviously all synths eventually run up against this at some point.

But what are those synths that you think do not?

Software and hardware both.

My nomination is Absynth. This thing is a beast, with the waveshaping, and extraordinarily vast envelope options. I really am blown away by all the possibilities, as well as the sound quality. Every time I open it up, I feel like I am going to be able to invent a new sound that is interesting.

Profire 2626 - blown?

I've been using my M-Audio Profire 2626 with my 2011 Imac and Logic 9 for years now. Everything has worked fine until yesterday. I was listening to pandora while doing some things around the house and the music stopped. At first, I thought pandora just needed to be refreshed, but when I went in the room to do that, I noticed it was still playing but no sound was coming out. I refreshed/restarted all my gear and still no output. All lights on the profire 2626 are on like normal. I also tried to record to see if it was communicating with my Imac at all, and It was, so I know the interface and computer are communicating. None of the outputs seem to be working. No sound in the headphones either.

A few days prior something really weird happened that I've never seen before... All of a sudden, while surfing the web, a shade came down from top to bottom on my screen, then a message that read, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." followed by (I assume) the same message in 4 other different languages. Everything was frozen. The error message had no red "x" to close the window. I had to hard-reset my comp. I wonder if this is related?

Can anyone help?

Rokit 8 gen3 audible noise/auto-mute

Hey guys, dispite the countless warnings i read on here about these speakers, i went into L&M originally planning on getting a pair of hs8's but they only had one in store and i needed gratifacation damnit! I compared the rokit8's with yorkvilles 8", hs8 in mono, and the adam 8". The adams sounded the best of course but the rokits seemed really clear and nice sounding to me but thats probably cause i dont know what to listen for. though it didnt feel THAT scooped to my ear considering how much shit you guys give them.

anyways i get them set up in my room, i plug them into my ensemble (first gen) and set the outputs to +4 as they are SUPPOSED to be pro audio equipment right?? but theres a loud hiss. its much better when set at -10. but from what i understood about these two output levels is that -10 is for consumer grade audio gear with lousy headroom, correct?

and on top of that. i cant listen to music quietly on these things without the auto-mute, that i didnt know they had built in, triggers. But only on one side usually! its so dumb.

ive basically decided im going to return these and get the HS8's like i originally planned. unless theres a part of the picture im mising here, maybe theres some settings im forgetting about? can i turn off the auto mute? so annoying

Need help with clever drum samples solution

I could use practical suggestions about organization of drum samples.

Like most people, I got hundreds of them, fairly well sorted. Loading and using them is no problem in itself, and I am not talking about complete realistic drumskits here, such as NI Studio Drummer or EZdrummer etc. I am talking about single shots or simple 'patches' (2-3 audio files comprising 1 kick or snare sound).

My biggest problem is I need to compare samples, listen to them playing in the mix, to pick out the best one out of many. I will need to be able to browse through many different snares, kicks etc, without exchanging all other kit sounds in the process.

The samples are not just single audio files, but often 'patches' - meaning one sound comprised out of the combination of several audio files. One example of this is that '1 hi-hat' is comprised of several audio files: open, closed, half-open, foot, bell etc. This complicates things.

I have no problem translating samples between different formats, such as Battery>Kontakt or other similar ways. But I am having problems deciding what is the best way to go, to be able to compare them directly as much as possible.

Do you know of any smart solutions for this? Heard of someones clever setups? How do you do this, if you do? Any recommendations for sample playing software that might be suitable?

Thx

/S

Need a stand-alone music player for SDHD cards!?!?!?

Wow, completely shocked by how little I've found on the matter. I've been searching on and off for two months and haven't really found much! I just need a stand-alone music player that has at least 1/4" outs (two, one for left, one for right) as opposed to cheap 1/8" stereo jack. I don't want that, I want two separate 1/4" outs like on my Steinberg UR22. And it must be able to read SDHD cards because I have about three hours of .WAV music. This is exactly what I need, nothing more nothing less. I've already researched my options, not interested in lossless or mp3 or any of this. Just wav. Any reason why I'm having such a hard time finding a player like this? Everytime I find one, there's some stupid problem, like they're not for SALE?? This might be perfect but what the hell? It's like they're offering a product but they don't want you buy it or see the damn pictures. And then others I find are small cheap little plastic junk with garbage 1/8" out. What gives???

Yamaha DM1000 / Mini-YGDAI card options?

I still have this nice Yamaha DM1000 console for remote work, with the My-mLAN (firewire interface) mini-ygdai card installed for direct connection with my PC laptop. It has always worked well over years. Now that they are discontinuing firewire on all laptop, I need to find another connection solution. USB would have been perfect, but for an unknown reason, Yamaha don't make a USB Mini-YGDAI! (Though the USB port is built-in their 01V now, that would be probably easy for them to do that as an optional extension card).

I see now that the new connection fashion is via RJ45/LAN cable. There's many cards available, Dante, Cobranet, etc. I would like to know what the most efficient and simple way to have 16in/16out at the same time working on a simple ASIO driver with my lan connection on my PC?

Any help/suggestion welcome’d!

bass station 2 and roland TR-8

I have a bass station2 and a roland tr-8 but not sure how to connect up. the midi out of the tr-8 goes to the midi in of the bass station 2. when i hit the pattern and start on the tr-8 it syncs correctly too the bass station 2.

The trouble I have is that the tr-8 seems to be sending the midi note as well to the bass station 2 so that when the kick drum kicks the corresponding note plays on the BS2.

Not sure how to deal with that.

when I use maschine or ableton the problem does not occur as I can control the devices.

I hoped I might when away from home just take the tr-8 and the bs2 and sync them up and just jam with the two.

I tried to post on the novation forum but its systems wont let me post for some reason and google searching has not helped.

Remote Recording / Computer Case

I'm looking for a case to mount all my external USB and Thunderbolt accessories in, so I can be a little more portable than I've been up until this point. I've got maybe a half a dozen odds and ends that are a nuisance to move around and reconnect all the time. These are things like a couple of SSD drives, a powered USB hub, Belken TB Expander, and the biggest of all, a Sonnet TB chassis with my UA Octo and RME card.

I work with them in the studio, but would like to be able to just grab the whole pile and work remotely, or even just take into the living room or out on the deck, without having to disconnect and reconnect everything all the time. Ideally, I'd just run a single cable TB cable from my laptop into the box, and have just a power cord to the wall. It's getting to look like a middle school science fair project with all those wires sticking out.

I've been able to cut down on the number of power supplies I need by using one larger one with a break-out cable. But I'l still probably need two or three total.

I was thinking of getting a small DJ case, but I don't know how I'd mount everything in there. Air flow is probably going to be an issue with the Sonnet. I'm not looking for a 19" rackmount case. I have one of those 6-slot SKB cases, and it's too big. I was thinking of something about a briefcase size.

Anyone have any solutions or suggestions?

Need a New Computer

Hello

I have been "producing" with a torrented version ableton live 9 suite for about a year and have recently purchased it, but havent installed it yet because i am worried about being able to use my sets and dont know if they will work on the legit version. I dont do much recording of live instruments except for occasional electric guitar just for fun. My current setup consists of a audiobox 22vsl usb interface, a samson graphite 49 controller, and 2 rokit 5 monitors. I use my lenovo laptop from 2011 (sadly, thats about as much as i know about it) and keep all of my sets on an external 300 gb hard drive. I am looking into getting a new pc and am leaning towards desktop because i dont do shows (yet) and have heard that they are much more powerful/better bang for your buck. I am not against building my own (i have friends who know much more about computers than i do that could help me). I have many questions as to what would work best for what i do, as far as internal or external ssd vs hdd, a reasonable price range, and the key things i should look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

AT 4033 mics

I happened upon AudioTechnica's samples page featuring the 40-series as one of the earliest users of the AT4033. (for VO) when it was first introduced.

Always seemed to fit my voice nicely.

As I recall i moved to a TLM103 from that but wondered if anybody can tell me

how this model has been improved upon over the years -- and how the 4060 compares -- Current 4033 (CL?) and 4060 sound virtually identical other than the 60 is a little more smooth and forgiving in some ways - at least on the singer in the site's samples.

Thanks!

Confused about converters

I'm really confused about upgrading to separate AD/DA converters.

Right now I'm using a Profire2626 with some outboard pres, so the profire is basically my converter.

I figured that most standalone converters were the same, IE: They had balanced inputs on the back that converted the signal, and then connected to the PC.

I was looking at the Aurora Lynx 8/16 and the back panel makes no sense to me. If I go that route is there another piece of gear I need between the pres and converters? It doesn't look like there's any way for me to even connect the output of my pres to the converter. I'm super confused, and can't seem to find an answer.

Small bass amp suggestion with a twist

I'm neither a great guitar player or bass player. My main instruments are drums. However, I do lots of recording in my home studio. Besides Logic pro X and various guitar, synth, eq, etc plug ins, I really like recording "outside the box".I have an epi valve JR stack that sounds great to my ears (records nice as well) running a BOSS ME-80. I'm really enjoying the results I am getting. I now want to have an amp for my Yamaha Bass to where I do not have to work parts out thru DAW. Plus option to record direct and thru amp at same time if needed. But here is the twist. I like recording stereo guitar at times. The me-80 has stereo outs for a second amp, pa, etc. So I would like to buy a Bass amp that would be nice as the 2nd guitar amp when I record stereo guitar tracks. The main amp is the valve jr, the secondary amp would serve as a way to "thicken" chords a bit. Now, I'm looking for something in the lower Ampeg, Fender Rumble area. No Peavey amps please. I had so much bad experience with a new Classic 30 a few years ago that I avoid their amps.

I was planning to get the Sansamp direct box for effects. Now I could save the $$ for the sansamp and get a Line6 bass amp with effects and modeling

I would like to buy new and under $400 price range. Any suggestions?

Thoughts on my modular synth layout? (ModularGrid Screenshot)

I'm planning on diving into modular synths at the beginning of summer. My immediate budget is about 3k, but I'll be working full time so I'll be able to buy whatever models I couldn't get off the bat. Call me crazy, but I really want to have four voice control on my modular synth. Call me out if this is really bad idea. :P

Starting to Mix and Master Equipment..

Hi there everyone!

I make R&B and Hip-Hop beats and when I Mix and Master them I try to get it as close as I want them to sound and they come out way better than what my friend's songs sound like..

But I do know they aren't good enough to play on the radio, live show, or to sell in a cd or itunes..

Starting off with mixing and mastering I do not have that much money to buy expensive equipment at the minute..

I'm thinking about buying the Yamaha NS-10T monitors and Hafler P3000 amp..

What do you guys think?

Is this a good start to mixing and mastering?

M Audio Sputnik Power Supply not working

Hey all,

I bought two M Audio Sputniks and one of the power supplies switches on (has the red light on) but doesn't produce any audio. The exception is there are short spikes through the signal chain when the High Pass filter is engaged, or the -10 db pad. Both microphones produce a good signal through the other power supply, so what could be the problem with this one?

I asked the seller about returns and they're totally fine with having it returned and replaced. Both mics are brand new, so it's unusual not to work out of the box.

What does it sound like the problem could be?

Sample rate error

Could not complete the Open Session... command because Pro Tools could not set sample rate to specified value.

Pro Tools is being very "Pro Toolzy" for me today.

For some reason, PT11 has decided it wants to throw this error at me now. It hasn't had a problem with the way I've configured my HDSO9652 card until today. I've discovered that PT now doesn't like that I am using one of my Frontier Tangos as a clock source and wants me to assign the source to internal. Well, that causes me issues elsewhere and up to now every thing was hunky-dory.

So when I go to open an old project, I have to change the clock source to internal, open the project and then change the source to ADAT 1.

FWIW, it lets me create a new project without doing this work around.

Any idea of what might have happened? I have been dinking around with other DAW products but I've shut those down completely and rebooted my computer to eliminate that as a culprit. Hmmmm?

Mytek Stereo192 ADC vs Mytek 8X192 ADC?

I don't have access to a dealer or studio for comparison listening, but after as much research as possible into products at my price point ... Burl B2, Lyra 2, Hilo, Pure 2, benchmark, etc. ... I have settled on Mytek for ADC mix down recording.

What I would like to know is whether the ADC in these products are identical. By identical I mean analog input path with op amps, converter, etc.

If the paths are identical I would stretch for the additional features of the 8X192. If the 192 has superior ADC I would choose that.

I have emailed Mytek with my question, but they have not yet responded.

Any help from someone knowledgeable about these two products would be greatly appreciated.

Drum replacement with sample from earlier in the session

I have never done any type of drum replacement, so forgive me for this seems rudimentary to many of you.

I'm working on a record where the drummer plays great strong rimshots on the verses of one song, but not the choruses. I really would like to sample the verse rimshots and trigger them in the chorus.

I'd like to know what system is nice and simple for creating said sample, and then triggering it later in the song.

Drive Setup for DAW

Hi all,

I know this has been asked before, probably numerous times, but most threads seem to be from 2011 or 2009 when SSD's weren't the norm (at least in the "normal" computing world).

What's the preferred setup for a DAW? I was originally thinking:

-SSD (256GB) for OS and programs

-7200RPM (2TB) For samples and projects (video and audio, video being playthroughs and the like, probably shorter clips)

-7200RPM (2TB) For backup

But some input has me re-thinking.

As far as I understand (correct me if I'm wrong), the purpose of splitting them up is for "optimal" reading of the drives, which is why you want samples and audio projects split up.

I'm wondering now, though, how to change it up without increasing costs (if possible). I'm also wondering how big a drive one would use for samples - i.e. EW's Ghostwriter was about 70GB (that's just one library).

Would something like this be more than enough?:

-SSD (128GB) for OS and programs

-10k RPM Raptor drive (300GB) for samples

-7200RPM (2TB) for audio and video

-7200RPM/5400RPM External HDD (1TB for now, increasing with time) for backups.

Addictive Drums 2 vs SSD 4

Hello!

I have been looking for new drum software for a while. After some research, I am considering either AD 2 or SSD 4. I have read quite a few reviews and comparisons, but they all seem to focus on AD 1. I have also listened to the samples available on the official websites and some stuff on YT.

I am mostly into rock/metal music, however I like fund/prog/rock drum kits better. Having said that, I will probably use Metal drum kits occasionally. The AD 2 samples seem to be better/naturally sounding than SSD 4 (especially the Metal kits), aside from cymbals that seems to be kinda artificial.

I am not sure how good are the SSD deluxe kit (some of them are probably included in the samples on their website). The SSD contains more kits, but they all seem to be derivative of a few base kits.

I haven’t really considered performance and usability factors yet. I know that AD 2 is more resource consuming than AD 1, not sure how does it compare to SSD 4. I use 64 bit system with only 4 GB memory and integrated graphic card, which might be an issue.

I am an amateur/newbie so I do not really want to spend more than AD 2/SSD 4, i.e., no expansion packs etc.

Any constructive input much appreciated, thanks!

Considering buying Soundcraft signature 22mtk. Help!

Considering buying Soundcraft Signature 22mtk for recording a band (Drums, Keys, Vocal, Bass Guitar) and mixing in DAW. Does anyone have any experience with this desk?

Personally , i think it looks like a good piece of equipment, but i have some concerns:

- I cant find it's sample rate (assuming bit rate is 24).

- I have no experience with the ghost preamps installed

- I have no experience of this desk and cant find any useful reviews of it.

Ensoniq ESQ1 No sound on outputs

Hey guys! :synth:

Stage 1

I got a faulty ESQ1 for repair, the main problem now is - no audio output on any DACs. To reach someone, who is skilled with Ensoniq stuff is impossible, though the boards are known to be fairly easy to repair. The unit powers on, and the display shows the starting screen and then the current patch. Buttons seem to work fine

I must say, that the unit is in a bad shape overal, so it could be anything, I did research, but it gets confusing quickly..

I ask you for advice, what should I look at firstly?

Stage 2

Ok, so I won't describe the hassle of cleaning the synth inside and

out, but concentrate on what I might have spotted for now.

Keyboard:

Perfectly, needs to be fully replaced - many keys are damaged, the

chassis has broken key levelers, fixed with nails and tape:) and what

is interesting- my metal ESQ has the keybed installed from the plastic

one. The keys do differ. The keys work fine over MIDI, so do the Pitch

and Mod wheels.

Buttons/sliders:

All buttons work, so does the data potentiometer. Can't say for the

Volume, cause there's no sound coming from outputs, as I mentioned. I

cleaned the sliders, btw.

MIDI:

The synth responds to program data, and sends MIDI just fine. I

connected it to MidiOx, so I could check the Midi trafic - all

controllers send data. I could load the patches into the synth, but

the battery is dead, as suspected, and all patches return to Brass1

when power off. I performed a factory reset. FILTER tuning showed

figure 144, what seems ok, according to the manual.

Power:

It powers fine, but at first had some hum and buzz, that are gone now.

I reseated all cable inputs where possible. The power supply is 220v,

seems to be made in Italy, so as the keyboard.

OS :

My ESQ runs OS 1,75, that is archaic really. If I repair the unit, I

will definitely install the 3,5

Will do some simple tests tomorrow, but I'm not qualified to diagnose

the Volume problem. At least I localized it, since it was not keyboard

or software error

Sequencer:

The sequncer works great, and sends a Metronome Click on output, so perhabs that is not an A/D converter problem?

Looking forward your help and advice!

Modern MIDI patchbays

So, I realize there are lots of threads on similar topics, but none on this specific issue. I see lots of threads on older midi patchbays, midi interfaces, and smaller modern units that are able to patch, but almost nothing on 'what to do these days if you need at LEAST a 16x16 patchbay'.

The only advice that ever seems to be given is for older patchbays, such as the JL Cooper Synapse or the MSB 16/20 or similar ... is there really NO modern solution for this?

Let's say I have 4 MIDI out from an MPC, 2 from a computer, and 1 from an ASR, that's already using 7 inputs ... not to mention any effect units, or racked instruments (which I happen to have many more of). What is a MODERN solution for patching these together??? Is there one?? Am I missing something?

I fully realize that I'm able to use MIDI thru, but that will incur a delay. I'm not sure what other possible solutions I could be overlooking. How did studios in the early 90s with 30+ rack instruments patch all their MIDI together??

I've came up with a whole list of modern options, however, I can't really find any reliable reviews from people using them in this manner.

There is of course, the MOTU MIDI Express XT, which you apparently can chain 3 or 4 together on a USB hub, and patch between them. How is the latency on this? Is it acceptable?

There is also the older MOTU MIDI Timepiece AV USB, which allows a serial connection with another unit. I have a hard time believing this connection runs higher than 1x MIDI rate, but I could be wrong ... does anyone know if this solution has close to zero latency?

There also seems to be the iConnectMIDI units, that lets you chain a bunch together over USB as well. However, they seem to be a bit overpriced for offering only 4 ports each (compared to the price of 8 on the MIDI Timepiece). I don't think they were quite designed for this in mind ...

Another interesting one I found, was the Alyseum AL-88c, which connects over Ethernet (and can be chained). It's very reasonably priced for a 8 I/O box, and seems to be able to do patching as well. However, the only reviews of it I can find on gearslutz, is that it has not so great PC<->MIDI performance. I can't seem to find anyone who has tried to chain 2+ of these on a network to use as a patchbay ...

And the final 'solution' I found, was the MIDIbox Matrix project (mb_matrix [MIDIbox]). This one actually seems PERFECT, however, it isn't a commercial project. I'd easily pay $500 for one though.

Has ANYONE had any experience with the latency times in chaining any of these more modern units??? Can any of these systems approach the 0 latency speeds of older 8x8 integrated patchbays?

If there's something I'm missing, please let me know :)

LDC mic for midrangey male vocal?

Hi all,

Doing a lot more vocal work and looking to grab a great LDC for the home studio.

I've got a somewhat midrangey tenor voice that works great on stuff like SM7s but on U87s and some other LDCs I begin to sound like a muppet...at least to my ears, kind of poking out some of the less 'flattering' areas of my range.

Any LDC mics under $2k used that would be bit more forgiving for me? Was going to go down the 251-style route but seems even the clones are still $$$. Once I get a few good options I'll head down to Vintage King and check them out.

Thanks! hooppie

UltraNova quick questions...

I am now in the throes of anticipation as I await my new controller to arrive. I have to temporarily retire the Phatty while its analogue board takes a trip to the US, which is why the UltraNova has arrived. While I wait, I have some questions!

First up, does the UN do Envelope looping? A look through the manual says it does, but it is not clearly stated. If anyone has patches that demonstrate it, let me know. I know there are lots of soundbanks available, so if you know which ones, I will load them up firstly.

Secondly, I am going to use this as a keyboard controller, through Mainstage. I intend to use mostly just the keyboard for my outboard gear,

This should work OK - do I really need Automap,

Which might end up getting in the way of my workflow?

Next, I suspect I am going to try to plugin the synth using USB, which I am uncomfortable with.

Is the sound quality OK with this? I am not intending to plug lots of external gear into it, but just use the synth output over USB as an Aggregat device. This "should" work ok?

Next up, MIDI control will likely be over USB as well. I intend to use the Plugin to program it a bit

But also play other instruments from the keyboard as required. If I set the UN to Local Off, it will do the right thing when I select it as a Track and play itself? I am guessing so, but just want confirmation.

I am partly gettng this synth because of the six envelopes and 20 mod sources. I know it is never going to come close to FIZMO, but how good are the wavetables? If I can get a certain level of complexity with env looping, arpeggiation and chord shifting, it should be enough to jam with?

Thanks if you read this far....

Beesneez or Flea vs. Vintage Neumann?

I have read many threads on how modern mics compare to one another, such as Beesneez vs. Flea. I've also read many opinions on how close these mics get to sounding like original, vintage Neumanns. Apparently, very close, but they miss the mark a little. Just because they are different, does this mean that they're not as good? I imagine that Beesneez and Flea build just as much quality into their mics as Neuman did in the 1950s or early 1960s.

My question is, are modern remakes simply not as good, or, are they every bit as good, but with their own unique flavor? Do they have all the magic? I'd love to hear some opinions!

I've compared many recordings of the Flea 47, the Flea 49, the Beesneez Tribute 1, and original Neumann M49 and U47; all downloaded from internet forums. I've concluded that Ben and Ivan are doing wonderful jobs making killer sounding recording tools. All the vintage mojo seems to be there, but in various shades. I can't really make a decision because of my lack of experience with all these mics. What do you think?

Thanks.

Acoustically treating my new home studio 11'2" x 11'2" x 9'

Hey friends,

So I have been struggling for years in my dorm room trying to churn out good tracks. In that time I have constantly faced the problem of things sounding perfect in my bedroom but terrible when translated elsewhere. Now that I have found my own apartment I am finally given the opportunity to have an entire room dedicated to producing and mixing.

I was sad to find out that my room is a perfect square which is an acoustical nightmare according to the research I have done. Although it is not ideal, I am still ecstatic about this opportunity and want to make the most out of it.

The room's dimensions are 11'2" wide x 11'2" long x 9' high, carpet flooring, and drywall on all sides and ceiling. I have already researched lots and have an idea of what I need but any extra guidance would be much appreciated.

I am thinking two 2' high corner traps in each corner of the room (eventually will have every corner trapped from floor to ceiling). As well as two 1' x 1' x 2" panel absorbers for each wall where first reflections are, four 1' x 1' x 2" panels behind my speakers, four more 1' x 1' x 2" panels directly behind my head on the back wall, and possibly a cloud for the reflection point on the ceiling (although I've read a carpet makes a cloud not needed.)

I will primarily be mixing and mastering my own tracks (Electronic Music), so I assumed I would be aiming for a dead room.

If the foam I stated above was sufficient, I was hoping to have some extra $$$ to purchase an IK multimedia ARC 2 for that extra bit of flattening, but I don't want that to be start a war in the thread, and I'd gladly replace that investment for more foam if needed.

If you guys have any questions let me know, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Ken

There are all of these really moody/breathy/melancholy type synth sounds that I love, and would like to know where to begin to create them. I have U-He Diva which might be able to emulate some of the analog synths he probably used....A site called "The King of Gear" believes the sounds are from a DSI Poly-Synth, Prophet 08 or Prophet 12. Any tips on getting these sounds using Diva or Zebra or Serum (my 3 vstis i own currently)?

Need help deciding a kit for 100sqft room

I'd like to get acoustics for my 100 square foot room (about 10l x 10w x 9h). I've been looking at the London 10, Auralex alpha-dst, and other similar kits. Is one better or used for different kinds of rooms? What kits would you recommend?

Upgrading my USB Interface - Questions

Hello,

I have a Steinberg CI1 USB Interface for about 4 years and I think it's letting me down. Not speaking about the "clicking" when loading lots of VST's, my DAW hasn't stopped freezing for the last 2 weeks, it's very annoying, so I think it's high time to check out other USB Interfaces, as I think my CI1 is a low end product (I don't know what you think about it)

So, I do record vocals sometimes, but I'm mainly using FL Studio with lots of VST's/Plugins for music production.

After some researches, I concluded that the RME Babyface is a very nice USB Interface that doesn't disappoint.

My questions are the following:

1) Do I really need this card if I don't record often and if I'm mainly using it for music production? In this case, what would be the advantage of owing this card rather than a cheaper one? Less Latency? Capability of loading lots of VST's without "clicking"?

2) I read that the "BIG" thing about the Babyface is that it supports 192Khz. What does it mean? Would it be useful for me?

3) I see that this USB Interface has been discontinued by RME. Why? Is there now another better card on the market?

Thank you in advance for your answers,

Have a nice day!

Upgrading my USB Interface - Questions

!

Hi everyone!

So I'm migrating from FL Studio to Pro Tools because I think people might use it more and it's better to know two languages instead of one..

Is it really better to mix & master and record vocals in Pro Tools than FL Studio?

Why is this because of the plugins?

Okay, back to the original question..

How can I add a piano roll to a waveform track?

Or add a .wav sample to a midi track?

Best repair shops in Portland OR

Need recommendations for a good shop in the Portland area to repair an OBXA and DMX

Got an OBXA 8 voice/120 program with the JL Cooper mod (MIDI and possibly something else) and a MIDI'd DMX.

Need to get both cleaned/fixed up some so I can sell them (I originally posted about them on here about 4 years ago but got side tracked and they've sat in a closet since then)

Anyway, I'm now living about 5 hours from Portland OR and have to make trips there about every 90 days so the situation lends itself to finally getting off my butt and getting them fixed.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Brad

Best way to expand Apogee Quartet through ADAT? Ensemble?

I'm looking to do some recording that requires more than the 4 mic pres that my Quartet provides. It seems like plugging in more inputs via ADAT is the way to go. I'd like to keep it under $1000, so I've been looking at older Ensembles as an option. Does it matter that they're old, since it's just going through ADAT? I just want some nice sounding pres and don't care that much about a bunch of modern features. Having 4 more pres would be good, but 8 would be even better. Any recommendations besides the Ensemble? To get more bang for my buck, I'd like to get something used.

Part two to my question is whether my computer can handle all the new inputs. I'm running Logic X on a 2.9 GHz Macbook Pro from 2012.

Thanks!

MOTU 828 mk2 audio always drops out

Hi guys,

I need help with my MOTU 828 mkII USB on Windows 8.

Audio drops out after like 3 minutes. I don't hear anything anymore, but in the windows control panel I can see that it's still outputting sound.

While the interface is connected to the PC, it is normal that you can't change the sample rate on the interface itself but only in the MOUT audio console software on the PC. Once the connection cable is released, you can change the sample rate on the interface. I just noticed that after the sound drops out I can change the sample rate on the interface. So apparently the USB connection gets interrupted. What can I do?

I tried the following things:

- reinstalled driver and tried older drivers

- tested the interface with other USB slots

- turned off the USB power saving function

- set the interface to factory default

My system:

Win 8.1

i7-5820k

ASUS x99 Extreme4

16 GB RAM Crucial Sports

Samsung 150 GB SSD

Seagate 2 TB HDD

Best studio today to record 60s -early 70s jazz sound

Hey Guys,

I'm super into the Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" era music as well as the Herbie Hancock Mwandishi period. Musically and sonically things were going into very uncharted territory and it is simply out of this world. I create my own music and in no ways want to "copy" there sound. The thing i love about those recordings is they all have a vibe (combination of musically and sonically) - Herbie Hancock "Sextant" is super dry by very mellow and warm sounding. I almost feel like I'm melting when I listen to it, "Bitches Brew" is very live and room mic sounding and dry minus the delay on the trumpet at parts.

This is what I've gathered as to what studio and gear these albums were recorded on and used - note some of this could be wrong but just to get an idea of the sound and gear that I want to have access to:

-Herbie Hancock "Sextant" was recorded at either Different Fur Studios (at least for OD) or Wally Heider's (Hyde Street) studio A with a Quad 8 board.

-Herbie Hancock's "Crossings" was recorded at Pacific Recording using Quad 8

-Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio (Frank Laico and Stan Tonkel engineers and Teo Macero producer)

If I wanted to go into a studio today and achieve either of those vibes recording gear and live room wise obviously going to tape, what options would I have that would literally transport me back into that kind of studio with all of that exact gear from that time period including mics? I'll take added vibe of the room as a plus ;) but that's only an added bonus.

here's the music I make just if you were curious as well:

Back up :p

I realized I had been posting without having any info, or an intro post. So, Let's back up to that then first.

Hey, I'm Bry(an) I'm essentially starting out... I know some things.

I am currently working with Fl Studios 11, which is a big step up from a version of magix I was using... ugh. lol.

The ultimate goal is to get my stuff used more so in the background of things, like events, short films, etc. But I have interests in other aspects such as sound design and voice acting.

Right now, Because I'm trying to follow the Guru videos, I'm taking... what seems like forever to learn how everything is set up.. I'm just kind of experimenting and not making much in the way of actual music.

Though I started out back in 2013 as more of a curiosity... but it grows more as I tinker with it.

Things I'll definitely be around for are channels, and sends and the like.. those are still a little fuzzy to me.

I've got some stuff you can check out to see where I'm at : http://ift.tt/1DrD93V

Thanks if you read all of this. See ya soon!

preparing a stereo music score mix for 5.1 - advice needed

hi chaps

I'm mixing a film score at the moment - in stereo on Protools 11 HD.

the score will also be mixed in 5.1 for Theaters by the dubbing / re-recording engineer.

He has asked me to supply stems. He doesn't have specific requirements on how these ought to be split up and for various political reasons it is difficult for me to get a precise spec.

so--

whats the best approach to take? Stems per instrument group + solos .. or a Stereo mix with some key elements separate? Any dos and donts?

If anyone has any advice on the best approach to take here I would be hugely grateful.

its a difficult topic to search for on Gearslutz so if there are any old threads on this subject a link would be appreciated.

Promotional dead-end ?

I'm confident enough about the music I produce, and it generally has a good reception among my peers, but in terms of promotion, I'm not really sure what to do anymore.

Any info I present here is not an attempt to brag, but only to present relevant facts to highlight my dilemma.

I've been making electronic music since roughly 2000, and in that time i've been on the cover dvd of computer music magazine, had a track played on the MTV music station, been played on lots of radio stations including BBC Radio 1, and have just recently appeared on an album alongside such giants as Autechre, Orbital, Future Sound of London, Plaid, Luke Vibert, Luke Slater etc.....

I have a pro soundcloud account, I've tried Facebook ads for a week and got squat, I have videos on youtube, I have a blog, twitter, reverberation, a Facebook page......

I have albums on iTunes and spotify, but its moot because no-one knows they are there, and I can't seem to find my audience, which is what I really want.

The problem is this , and I just can't understand it.

I have 1,100 followers on soundcloud, but can't seem to get any more.

My follower count has swung between 1,100 and 1,105 for the last month or so.

Every day, someone new will follow, then the next day they unfollow, then the next day 2 will follow, and the day after 3 will unfollow.

I used to get a lot of comments, but now all I get are likes, or the occasional "nice".

The music is good. Its produced well, and I spend a lot of time creating interesting hooks and melodies, I have an unforgettable logo, I've given out business cards, but i've just reached a state of promotional limbo, or some kind of wtf stalemate that I don't see how I can get out of.

Considering i've done all the above, what else can I do to find my target audience ? People on Facebook only seem interested in clicking like on pictures of cats, and have too short an attention span

I've looked at paying a promoter to do this for me, but any that i've contacted haven't even bothered to reply.

It may sound arrogant to some, but I know that what I do is way better than some artists who have "made it", but my soundcloud follower count hasn't risen by more than 5 in the last month.

Can someone help me understand what is going on, and how best to fix it. There's an audience out there for my music. I know this , but my efforts to promote are inept and ineffective.

I'd really appreciate some help from people who are engaged in marketing / promotion as I know this is the issue.

Thanks in advance.

2-way speaker sizing.

What are people's thoughts about 2-way speaker sizing, assuming they are over an adequate sub. 10", 12", 15", ???

I am moving from a passive 12" tops over 18" subs rig to an active rig. So far I have active 10"s over 18"s, and I like the sound of this setup. What are people's views on the relative strengths/differences of 10/12/15 over subs?

Thanks.

Help with Upgrade from EMU 1212m

Hearback system and the SSL x desk

Hi there,

Anyone out there using a Hearback system with the X desk ?

I'm I right in thinking there are no additional direct outs from the X desk to feed the Hearback System ?

If so, I'm I right in thinking my only options would be to use the Adat/optical which would limit me to recording at 44.1 or 48hrz.

Or I could I half normal the first eight on my patchbay between the converter and the X Desk, then also send the signal to the Hearback system ?

Also would this effect the signal to the X desk at all ?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

More question about Work For Hire

Recently a movie I did is to be released in USA by Lionsgate ( I am a Hong Kong movie scorer ). The original contract I signed with the studio was not a WFH contract, but according to the studio, Lionsgate insisted that to have the film distributed in USA, the contract has to be a WFH. On my stand point of course I don't want to sign this deal, the term was not on the original contract and furthermore the scoring was completed quite a while ago.

The question I'd like to raise is. is WFH a must for all scoring contracts in USA? As far as I know, WFH is not common in Europe and if the European composers do not sign the WFH deal, how are the European films distributed in USA ( if non WFH films cannot be distributed in USA )?

And for argument sake, if I have a publisher and I do not publish my works, then surely I cannot sign a WFH contract and consequently I cannot do any scoring job because ' your works cannot be distributed in USA'. This is so ridiculous....

Monitors for people who move around a lot - possible or just one big ugly compromise?

Hi guys. So I move around a lot - not jollys every week but moving location and usually country about twice a year. Right now I'm no longer blessed with easy access to fantastic mixing spaces and equipment wherever I go so I finally have to setup a better home studio rig. I'd be lying if I said I'm not obsessing about size and weight - I'm small, flights let you keep small (and light) with you and frankly I've enough stuff to haul around without another suitcase.

Budget-wise I can't go much above 800EUR/£550/$1000 (guesstimates on exchange rate there) and I'll be buying in Europe. And I've no way to really audition without spending the whole budget on shipping bck and forth. I know there's no way to get perfection for that (especially in a tiny package) I'll be still relying on my beyer770s for some aspects that little mons can't show up for sure. I can't necessarily treat every space I live in so no point getting something incredible but not sure how low I can go without really compromising. [Mixing primarily folk-pop and jazz, some indie rock.]

So which ones! I was right about to hit go on the Focal CMS40s but keep reading they make everything sound good with no work - not ideal. They do sound like they travel well although combined weight in their lovely little carry bag is more than hand luggage allowance (I know, I know, but this is real life consideration)

I've considered the Genelec 8020s and I know their bigger brothers but I do hear there's a big jump down to the 8020. Any thoughts on that? I like them also as I do some adhoc installations and I'm sure they'd be great for that but mix decisions? Not so sure.

Adam A3x.. don't look like they'd travel well. But nice price and decent reviews.

I even considered getting the Avantones and using in constant conjunction with the 770s. Any thoughts on that? I'd love that from a portability (and, not gonna lie, aesthetic) POV but do good mix decisions from cubes + headphones seem like a crazy dream or a sexy hipster reality?

I've trawled the interwebs for thoughts but hoping maybe someone is in a similar situation to me - moves around, maybe a smidge lazy and highly distrusting of airline baggage handling.

Any contribution to discussion greatly appreciated!

Best High End Compressor for Dance Music Master?

I know this question must be asked daily, but I thought I'd give this a shot.

I record and mix in Ableton, doing house / filtered disco, which is fine.

However instead of staying ITB - I now have the chance to sit in, get stuck in with mastering my tracks in a professional studio with SSL desk and hardware outboard.

Back in the 90s I had a Soundcraft Ghost desk (which I used to run my DAW through the channels and EQ's for more headroom) and then stick a single compressor on the master (3630 / or Drawmer DL241) for that pumpin' dance master sound / French pump.

Now I know some compressors are aggressive and perfect for this, and others are very transparent. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas on the following (maybe just picking one to push the master track through)

EL FATSO

UA 1176 (2)

Smart Research C2

Tube Tech CL1B

Crane Song HEDD

SPL Kultube

SPL Dynamaxx

SPL Transient Designer

SPL Charisma

Focusrite Compounder

I always thought it may have been the C2 as this pumps a little?

I know I can try them, but time is money, so just wanted an opinion as to what to stay away from.

Also I could do this to the mixed / unmastered stereo 2-track (through desk channels and a Compressor) OR take seperate stems and mix that way individually ?

Any thoughts, as its been a while since coming out of the DAW into a desk
