Radial J48 WOW!!

hello guys just wanted to share the sound of a test that i did, for the longest time ive struggled to get a good sound from DI instruments, ive always had issues with sound being to blurry unbalnced, mushy, the list goes on and on, but all of that that came to a conclusion with my purchase of this wonderful box, to me its trully been a jaw dropping experience, ive always wondered how the big boys managed to get such a clean sound from raw guitar, bass, keys, etc.... recording sessions ive heard, now i know how. anyways i made a little test of a bajoquinto, its a instrument that is used to record regional Mexican genre thats mostly what i record (norteno music) even tho i have pretty decent gear, but to me this has made the biggest difference in my opinion. ok so this the test, i tried to match the gain as best as possible, but even tho the improvement is very obvious doesnt matter about the gain so much in my opinion. ok, later guys leave your opinions, thx :)

Service Tech for Sony C-500

Hi and aloha from Kauai. Can anyone recommend a reputable Sony C-500 tech person for servicing these great old mics?

I've been told by a noted professional that the problem with my C-500 is most likely the DC/DC convertor has stopped working and the capsule is not being polarized so the output is much lower than it should be. There is a notable amount of low level static/frying sound and very little level. This mic in particular had not been taken care of properly by the previous owner, and was stored in a moist environment to boot. Thanks for your Help.

Vocal - Tune or Edit First?

Hello, everyone! What do you prefer? Tune the vocal before or after editing time using Elastic Audio?

I was told that editing the time after makes the tuning process sound better (as would be tuning a voice not processed yet), but others told me that it can generate small tuning problems for the vocal (already tuned).

So, what to do first? Tune or edit?

Cheers! :)

Partner for the T-Funk AK-47 MKII?

Getting myself a Telefunken AK-47 mkII within the next week or so. Was wondering if anyone here has enough experience with one to recommend a good preamp it pairs particularly well with. I will most likely be going after a modest single-channel pre, nothing crazy expensive. Considering a either Daking or something from the newer R. Neve Designs family, but would love to hear if anyone has run this particular mic through a certain piece of gear, and really enjoyed the results.

Micing a School Music

OK so whilst I've done sound for bands, I have now been given the job of doing sound for a version of Camp Rock and I'm a bit nervous about how to have everyone heard.

There are 14 characters who sing solo (or duets) and also chorus members.

The stage is approximately 10m (33ft) x 10m (including thrust) with a proscenium arch

I have a Mackie 3204 Mixing desk (Mackie - Onyx 32-4)

I have two JBL EVO Double 14 inch, and horn powered speaker cabinets. These cabinets have a power rating of 1,200 watts each and are flown on either side of the stage.

The hall holds about 300 people

The band (Kit, keys, guitars, bass) will be in a different room and will see the show via a video feed and will be miked and fed back to the desk

What i'm looking for is suggestions on mics...I have access to 14 head set mics which covers the soloists but what I would like advice on is how to mic the chorus. Any advice would be appreciate...including whether i should get any rack units for processing (compression, limiter, gate, EQ etc etc)

I was originally going to make this tune an old school metal song, but after working with it decided to add some keys and just make it hard rock. Any feedback on the tune or production quality would be appreciated.

Hi fidelity LOUD keyboard amps??

This one's doing my head in, and any help is greatly appreciated:

I need a live keyboard amp with volume, as I play a lot of private event gigs in locations without proper sound reinforcement, so my amp is often the only output I get, and I'm competing with guitar amps, drums, etc. I had been using a Roland KC 350, something of an industry standard, but it couldn't quite handle the output I often needed, resulting in several blown tweeters and less than audible performances... I've tried a bunch of things since -- the Fishman Loudbox Performer (great sound, but also couldn't handle the SPL's) and most recently the QSC K8 and K10 PA speakers, neither of which seem to get quite as loud as the Roland, even with the gain knobs maxed out. Which is strange, since the Roland is only 120W, while the QSC's are 1000W with much higher max SPL specs.

I'm not really sure where to go from here short of a massive PA speaker that would be impractical to transport and less than ideal sounding at low to moderate volumes. I need something with a full frequency response, which rules out guitar amps and the like. Maybe the QSC speaker can handle more than its volume knob produces, so I could consider a boost pedal or something? Even my sales rep told me he wouldn't really know what to recommend if the QSC didn't do the trick.

Any suggestions? Thanks much!

Quick sub question for you sassy slutz

I got some small monitors. Playing my MS20 loud and low PLUS a huge kick kills them.

If I buy a cheap sub, will I be able to be loud without misrepresenting the sound?

Thanks babes.

Is RTAS still valued and purchased?

Hey GS'ers,

Well, I still use RTAS and TDM plugins big time in my mixes and productions.

I still buy RTAS plugins big time and now that Waves is giving all their RTAS/Native users TDM/Soundgrid plugin upgrades for free, I'm an extremely happy camper.

Tomorrow is a good day.

I see some manufactures either stop making RTAS plugins ala Softube, McDSP even AVID.

It's a shame because theres still a market for it. Why just stop supporting it?

Plugin Companies Like Plugin Alliance is incredible, cause when you buy their plugins and they give you all of the formats for the same price regardless of TDM or Native or whatever. Kudo's to PA for that!!! #1 in my book and I highly support their plugins by buying them as well. (BX_V2, BX_Saturator, MaagEQ4, BX_Meter, BX_ControlV2, SPL_TransientDesigner, SPL_TwinTube, VertigoVSC-2 etc...)freshflowe

I know there is still a huge market for RTAS plugin users as well as TDM users (I think)abduction

I'm not looking at going past PT10HD as there is

1. No reason too as it sounds the same

2. My system is rock solid right now even though I'm at 8.1.1 as I write this.

Plus some plugins are not being ported over that I use in every mix ala TDM TC VSS3, DVR2, Auto Tune, and a few others.

I really don't have a good reason to go to PTHD10 other than I'll be able to use a few other plugins that I like (Softube Saturation Knob and CraneSong Phoenix II).

Some plugin companies don't even bother to make RTAS plugins like Acustica and TB Reelbus etc and some plugin companies threaten to make RTAS plugin but don't "Sknote".

Anyway, the reason for this thread is not to vent but to see how many RTAS plugins users are still out there and support RTAS plugins?

I would love to hear what you guys think, your angle in this!

Why haven't you upgraded?

What makes you stay?

Thanks as always,

Marckfhkh

Newbie needs help -- sound control panel confusion on surface 3.

Hi. I'm setting up my pc for recording and I'm not clear on setting devices for playback. It seems like it should be obvious but I'm not getting playback out of the tascam uh-7000's headphone jack. I simply plan to record spoken voice. I feel like this windows mixer control panel has never made much sense to me. Also, audacity has recording and playback devices at the top too. Do these override the choices I make in the mixer panel? Do they return to normal when I exit audacity? I'm tempted to pull out my MacBook Air which I had planned to sell. I know it's more cut and dry than the windows control panel. I would rather understand what is happening though . This isn't the first time this has driven me crazy. Thank you for your great resource.

Vintech 573 vs Neve 511 vs Avalon 737 vs Drawmer 1960 vs ISA 828

This is a Rode nt2 mic, on the back of a Steinway K52 upright. The mic didn't move at all between takes. It's too close to the wall for a great sound...but so be it, just wanted to do a quick test, and then it occured to that, given that the sound was harmonically rich, it might be of interest to someone.

First Electric Guitar

So, I'm going to learn guitar.

I currently have a Taylor acoustic that is very nice. That being said I would also like an electric as they're a little easier on the fingers, and I'd like to be able to plug into my mixer and use headphones for late night practicing.

I don't know much about guitars, and what to look for in one. I want to spend as little as possible right now, while still getting something that is good and that will last. Hopefully ya'll can fill me in on where that "line" is between a crap guitar, and a decent guitar that is a deal. I'm also very handy with a soldering iron so replacing crap electronics isn't a big deal breaker if it can save me some money.

Any thoughts? I don't really have a budget, I'll spend what needs to be spent...but under $200 is preferred. Under $100 would be excellent if it's not garbage. Don't need an amp at the moment.

How to minimize "subjectivity"?

In the process of mixing and mastering music there are an infinite number of possible final products. What sounds good to some people sounds bad to others. Too dull/too bright, too dynamic/too compressed, too much this/not enough that, etc., etc. - the possibilities are endless.

How many times have you worked hard on something - thinking it's the greatest thing you've ever done - and the client didn't like it?

So, as a mixing or mastering engineering, how do you reduce that subjectivity? In other words, how does someone like Bob Ludwig or Dave Pensado seem to know what sounds good to the biggest group of people almost ALL of the time?

"Reference tracks" are an often advised technique however there are an infinite number of possible reference tracks! So, what's the key to getting, and staying, consistently "in the box"?

HELP! I need FOCUSRITE SAFFIRE EXPERT

DESPERATE FOR HELP TODAY. It is Saturday and Focusrite is closed.

SITUATION:

I have 3 Focusrite Saffire Pro 40's.

I spoke with a tech from Focusrite yesterday and know that only 2 will work daisy-chained via firewire.

This tech (very nice guy buy the way), informed me that I had to do the following:

1) Run the first 2 units in UNIT MODE and the 3rd in STANDALONE MODE.

2) To do this, I have firewire from my computer into UNIT 1 and a firewire going from UNIT 1 to UNIT 2.

3) The 3rd unit, I have a firewire going directly to the computer, and then an ADAT (optical) cable going from UNIT 3 OUT to UNIT 1 IN.

To setup the UNIT 3 for standalone mode", in the MIX CONTROL SOFTWARE, I set all ADAT OUTPUTS (1-8) to Analog In 1-8, respectively.

When I get everything turned on, all units fire up, except unit #3 does not physically show any connection (both lights on bottom "FW ACTIVE" and "LOCKED" are not lit)

I see All 3 units in the MIX CONTROL SOFTWARE, and Unit 2 and 3 are greyed out (which is good because UNIT 1 is "Sync Master".)

Anyway, I'm looking for somebody that can perhaps advice me here, or even be willing to walk me through on the phone. I may even pay you for it if you have paypal and help me get this working!!! $$$$

What samples do you have in your kit?

I've got a Machinedrum MKII UW which I love, but I keep feeling it was a waste to go for the UW model, as I never use the sampling features of it. I went for it because practically every post I've read on the topic said I'd regret not opting for the UW, eventually.

In my software studio, other than one-shot drums, I don't use samples either, I'm very much synthesis minded in all the music I do.

In the MD I'm perfectly happy with the synthesis engines for drums, and sometimes for other sounds too. So one-shot drum samples wouldn't really add anything for me there.

I saw an official video of the Volca Sample a few days ago where the designer created an entire drumkit from a single chord sample. Am I right to assume I can do the same (or go even further) with the MD if I were so inclined?

What else can I do with the UW bit of the MD?

What sort of samples do you have in your MDUW (or similar samplers, for that matter)? How do you use them?

Single cycle waveforms to approximate subtractive synthesis?

Raw synth tones?

Drum loops?

Musical phrase loops?

Vocals?

Anything else?

What's the most interesting things you can do with those categories of sounds in a sampler context?

How about the RAM record engines? Do you use them in a live context? What do you record with it, and is there anything special you do with its playback?

Here are a couple of excerpts from my last gig, if you want some context for what I usually do in a liveact:

Scarlett 2i2 vs 1st gen Apogee Duet - anyone had both?

Hi all,

I'm considering getting a used 1st gen Apogee Duet. I've used one briefly and it was stable and sounded nice and clear.

Immediately after that, I bought a Scarlett 2i2 and have done lots of vocal recording and D.I. electric guitar (via a buffered pedal into the line input), but so far no acoustic guitar. Have been happy with the results, but want to upgrade for more critical stuff i.e. vocal sessions for clients.

I never had a chance to compare side by side.

Any comments on the analog inputs Scarlett vs Duet much appreciated.

On a side note - very interesting to see the RME Fireface 400 keeps a relatively much higher second hand value vs the Duet 1st gen. I guess continued driver support?

Please Help: Nexus Unknown Expansion Error

Hello,

Hope you all are doing well this weekend! I'm experiencing a bit of a problem with Nexus that I was hoping I could possibly get some assistance with. Basically what i'm trying to do is use one of the Free Expansions that was provided to me by a friend (which I later tracked down and found on Youtube). I cross-referenced the expansion with those provided on the ReFx site and found that it wasnt a pirated expansion. The problem that I am experiencing is that about 3 minutes into demo'ing the expansion, I get the following error:

http://ift.tt/18xNPmS

I'm currently using the most recent version of Nexus (2.6.5), and have followed the instructions provided by the FAQ/Support page and have imported the Master Key file, Dance 2, and Rom Expansions into Nexus, so as far as I know everything that im doing is relatively current and correct (again, as far as I know). I've contacted ReFx support, but havent gotten a reply from them yet so I was wondering if any of you guys had possibly experienced this error before and knew of a solution? I've searched through the forums prior to making this post and hadnt found anything pertaining to this particular issue also.

Thanks all, and hope you're having a great day

Channel Strip Plugins: When do you use them?

Hi, everybody.

So there are a lot of channel strip plug ins that seem pretty popular around here. Various SSL emulations, REDD, other offerings from Metric Halo, Hornet, iZotope, etc.

I guess my first question is: why put filtering, EQ and compression on a single plugin when you can just mix and match to taste with many different specialized plugins as needed? Is it mainly a workflow thing? I can understand if you're looking to emulate an analog console sound but some of these plugins aren't emulating an analog desk.

Secondly, how do YOU usually use channel strip plugins? Do you put them on every single track? Buses? Aux? Master fader?

Recently I tried slapping on an SSL G emulation on basically every track in a project and A/Bing that with my original mix. I found it changed the character of the drums markedly. The high-fi quality I had in the original mix gave way to more rounded, punchier sound with a lot less highs in the cymbals but arguably a more balanced and cohesive result. Honestly I don't know which sound I prefer though.

ways to disguise one chord prog song

I notice quite a few pop songs have the same chord progression all the way through E.g. ed sheeran sing or marron 5 moves like jagger. Obviously, arrangement is the biggest factor here in order to make the song go places excluding what the vocal is doing.

Im trying to diguise a one chord prog song i have where the vocal melody has the right contour to have a verse and chorus but struggling to get the feeling of chorus. Any tips to make this work?

I know about adding percussion, changing hihats to rides or whatever, adding more elements but is there anything else i could be missing.

Hands-on workflow with pad-controllers for drums?

All,

Pretty simple question here I suppose...

For quite some time I've been looking for a decent sample-based hardware drum machine to supplement my TR-909 and Acidlab Miami, but I've been unable to find something that's easy-to-use, has x0x style sequencing and more importantly - to my liking.

I've honestly used my current machines to death and I'm after something a bit different that provides a wider palette of sounds.

I've splashed some cash and I'm going to devote the next few weeks to trying out Battery 4 along with an Akai LPD8 inside Ableton. However, I'm wondering how people tend to use pad/knob controllers in combination with their DAW and manage to keep a *hands-on* approach? I've tried software in the past and always found it way too fiddly and clicking the mouse all the time sucked the fun out of the whole process, so I'd like to get off to a good start here :).

Any thoughts most welcome!

Cheers,

Binny

Would Maschine be better with true standalone?

Maschine ahhh where to begin. some peoples production revolves around the thing. and i don't blame them. The Guys at Native instruments make some incredible software. Kontakt Massive Reaktor. anyway the maschine looks beautiful but its really not for me. (I'm still rocking the Mpc2000 by the way)

I just don't understand why all the fancy work that went into it can't be pulled away from the computer. Like look at those screens damn fancy fancy.

I feel if it had a true standalone mode where it would maybe act like a beat sketch pad and be able to make beats on it away from the computer and then when you get to your lab you can Unlock the full potential in it with NI Maschine software, i think it would be AMILLION times better. For now I'm sticking with my mpc.

What do you think?

Focusrite Console on Electric Ladyland by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Hello folks,

So, I've got probably the most superdumb question. According to Google, Focusrite Ltd. was found in 1985, but it has been said, that Electric Ladyland was recorded on Focusrite console with 110 pres back in 1968. So, my question is, how is that possible? Did Rupert Neve design some Focusrite consoles in the late 60's or what?

Sorry, I tried to Google... Didn't work out for me really well.

Soundcraft M8 preamp overdrive

Hi all, I recently bought an Soundcraft M8 and I noticed some issue on the preamp section.

I use the mixer mainly to record electronic stuff like drum machines and synths and my way is to usually distort kicks and snares, but I can't do it with that mixer cause everytime I try to distort a little bit it start to crack! It's very weird, cause I also noticed that the level of overdrive depends also from the point of the faders.

Anyone is in the same situation or ever noticed something like that?

I owned a FX16 or mackie 1604 and you can turn the gain all the way up on a kick and the overdrive is never crappy.

Berliner and Beamer: new tube preamps by Sonic Farm

Sonic Farm Audio is happy to announce that our new pentode preamps, Berliner and Beamer are now shipping.

Both are dual channel preamps with pentode gain stages.

Berliner is our take on the legendary Telefunken V76 tube preamp, but with some important twists that set it apart from the 50’s original.

The front end is a dual pentode variable gain stage with a regulated bias and EF86/EF806 tubes (instead of the discontinued EF804). This stage behaves and sounds exactly like the original. The output though, is a hybrid circuit borrowed from our flagship Creamer preamp. Without the step-down transformer, it preserves all the detail and sweetness of the first stage and offers both transformer coupled and transformerless (switchable) output. This gives it a broader tonal palette.

We also added instrument (DI) inputs on the front panel and dedicated line input transformers (balanced line in's) so that this preamp can be used to warm up your mixes as well.

Beamer is a Creamer and Berliner crossbreed, having one channel of each. It is a perfect solution for producers who want to pack maximum tonal versatility into a single package. Creamers use a single pentode in their gain stage without any negative feedback. This results in an increased harmonic content and very lively transients. Furthermore, the tube mode can be switched between triode and pentode for very different tonal characters. This combination of channels gives a choice of a classical tube sound (Berliner side) or a modern, more colored sound (Creamer side)

Instrument (DI) input on both channels. Omitted line inputs make it more affordable than both originating preamps. Available now. Details and specs on our website. (link below in signature)

PS I just need to put my guitar directly into the interface, and use a mic for vox.

Purpose of Digital I/O in audio interface

help me assess my D.I. options please

thank you.

when it comes to recording electric guitar direct i have the following options.

1) radial jd7 into a burl B1mic pre

2) guitar directly into the burl's low z input

and 3) a raven labs universal stereo instrument preamp directly into the converter.

i like option three the best because it doesn't consume one of my sweet preamps but is it a compromise? and which of the first two options would be the most commonly accepted in terms of day to day practice. they honestly all sound very similar to me but i don't have fabulous monitoring and i want to be at peace with whatever is the best option. thank you,

Looking for some information on the gold 70th anniversary Neumann U87.

There seems to be very little info other than these were a limited run of 300.

Can anyone comment on the differences sonically, what these retailed for and what a used sale price would be on these?

Best LDC for under $400

Hey All,

I'm a bluegrass lead guitarist and am looking at getting a new LDC. I'm seriously considering the C214 from AKG as I love the sound of a C1000 and I need a LDC for stereo micing acoustic guitar. Any other suggestions?

Huge 23 Mic Rap Shootout!

Check this out, 23 mic rap shootout at vintage king! If your on the market for a high end mic for rap it might be a good idea to check this shootout out. Even try downloading the session & mixing the vocals see how they work for you.

Quote:

When People Under the Stairs began work on their ninth album, 12 Step Program, the legendary underground hip-hop duo looked to Vintage King for guidance on microphone selection. Teaming up with Vintage King LA sales associate Jeffrey Ehrenberg, PUTS members Thes One and Double K worked to find a mic that would seamlessly capture both the duo and a wide array of guest emcees.

“There is always a possibility that you can get something that sounds epic or different, or that just has flavor,” Thes One says of the importance of a great mic. “There are a lot of classic hip-hop recordings where the sound of the vocals really makes the entire song.”

With over 20 microphones at PUTS disposal, the crew worked their way through the Vintage King Los Angeles mic room, trading off on verses and pieces of gear. In a unique twist on the classic mic shootout, VK rolled tape on each take and preserved all of the recordings for a behind the scenes view of the selection process. Check out the video to get a taste of The P in action and listen to each individual track featuring amazing microphones from Flea, Manley, Telefunken, Wunder and more.

Best DAC/Preamp Interface

I've officially STOPPED recording at home, and only use my home setup for post production now, which means the only qualities of my sound card that I care about are:

(a) Digital/Audio Conversion (aka DAC) of the sound card, and

(b) the output volume

I currently have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14, but the output is too low for my DT770's (80 ohm model). When I crank the headphone output up, the signal sounds "shitty." Is there another interface people can recommend, or do I just need to get a second stage preamp for the 770's? Obviously, I want to minimize the steps in my signal chain to avoid coloring the sound, but I'm pretty sure that any interface is going to have the same volume output for the headphones, unless there's actually a built in pre, right?

The options I'm considering are an Apollo Twin, an Apogee Duet, an RME Babyface, or a Motu Ultralite.

Thanks!

iConnectmidi 2+ or 4+?

Obviously iConnectmidi 4+ is superior but it's also more than twice the price and I am wondering if I really only need a 2+. My set up currently:

Macbook

iPad Air

BSII

MicroKorg XL

Arturia 49 key The Laboratory

LaunchControl + Launchpad mini

Scarlett 18i8 (Audio Interface)

Powered USB Hub

What I was originally looking for was just a way I could get bidirectional MIDI and audio between Mac and iPad. So anything from a iPad synth into my Mac DAW on channels as desired (either MIDI synced to transport or not), to using the iPad as an outboard FX VST for a track in my DAW, to using my iPad as a controller for my Mac DAW or DJ programs. Perhaps even recording into an iPad DAW like Auria something from my MicroKorg or BSII. That's about it.

I noticed to keep my iPad charged I will need the separate power adapter at $35. So that would roughly make the iConnect 2+ $100 cheaper than 4+. I do have the option of bus powered or not which I don't think the 4+ has. The 4+ has some really nice additions but if I could afford more equipment to hook up I'd probably have the cash to just buy the 4+ too. I do however like the idea of 4 (two stereo pairs) as oppose to 2 so I could potentially record more at the same time, but no big deal doing all one at a time.

At any rate any input as to whether the 4+ might be worth the extra investment at this point in time? It seems for my needs the 2+ is fine. Also if anyone runs iconnectmidi 2+ as an aggregate device currently can you tell me if I am then locked into a max of 24bit 44.1K or can I run my Scarlett at 88.2K and the iconnectmidi 2+ at 24bit 44.1K?

Thanks!

Need feedback on my practice raps (not production related sorry)

I need feedback for these practice raps, I'm still developing. Nothing is mixed or mastered, and I've asked some people for feedback but have received contradicting advice (one says my voice is good, other says it isn't) and advice from unqualified people (people who don't even listen to or like rap), so I just really want and need some more feedback. Novation SL MKII with Ableton for controlling plugins

Hi,

I ordered this unit on ebay and was wondering how easy it is to control plugins in Ableton. I basically want it to remember the controls for each plugin so I can just quickly access Diva, Predator, etc at the click of a button (or two).

Is this feasible?

Recording electric guitar with stereo effects

Traditionally, I would plug the guitar into my Digitech multi effects processor and then 2 line outs directly into the Pro Tools OMNI and record a stereo track. Anything wrong with that? :tut:

I'm trying to figure out the best way to record a stereo guitar FX, or even if I should. I'm paranoid that I'll drown out the vocal track because I can't think of any commercial bands record guitar FX in full stereo. On a lot of Van Halen records, the guitar would be panned to the right with just a reverb return on the left.

Also, am I correct in my assumption that a DI box is not needed when using a multi effects processor?

novation bass station II to replace elektron analogue 4 your thoughts please.

hey all, for thoughs of you who don't know me i'm trey from the uk and i'm totally blind.

i'm selling my elektron analogue 4 because its to menu based and the menu lay out changes with every update.

i was thinking of getting a novation bass station II to replace it because it has an arp and step seq just like the a4 and similar synth architecture but with 1 voice instead of 4.

so how good do people the bass station II would be for a totally blind person?

would it make a good replacement for the a4?

also what are the differences between the step seq and arp on the a4 and the step seq and arp on the bass station II?

also how much does the bass station II weigh?

your help with these questions would be most welcome!! kind regards trey.

Synth Recommendations?

My boss currently has a Korg TR-76 and has gone through all of the sounds in it, so he’s looking for a new synthesizer/workstation. He wants something with a bunch of preset beats, grooves, riffs, and sequences that he can write over. The Korg worked great but he wants something more current, with even more stuff, if possible. The more compact the better. It doesn't have to be cool or cutting edge or anything like that, and the sounds don’t have to be album quality; it’s only for writing, so “cheesy” is ok. Any recommendations?

TIA!

500 Rack to Komplete Audio 6 with phantom power

I'm using a Komplete Audio 6 interface and running a pair of preamps and eqs into it (Warm Tb12 -> RND 551). The Komplete has phantom power accessed through a little button in the back. I have the phantom power disabled and the gain at zero on both channels so that I can use the Tb12's phantom and gain. My question is if that little button on the back accidentally gets pushed in by a cable or something am I going to damage the EQs by running phantom power into them?

Why is Eventide Eclipse not the best choice for the first reverb unit?

I'd like to give my sound some retro-futuristic space to breathe within and I'm pondering whether I should go for the Eventide Eclipse as my first digital reverb unit.

To those who have used it:

-Is the Eclipse any good at creating "realistic" reverbs like room, big halls?

-Does it do an excellent plate simulation?

-Does it invite you to program new reverb effects? Why or why not?

If anything, why is Eventide Eclipse not the best choice for the first reverb unit for the £1500 budget?

eBay return policy: How many of u have been ripped off?

Hi, I recently experienced a couple incidents on eBay where someone sold me defective gear. This is supposed to be covered by eBay buyer protection.

However, in my experience, eBay demanded me to produce a formally signed written estimate, on a professional letterhead, within 5 days of opening the case.

This would seem impossible in most cases. How many local shops can repair a 1970's Neumann? Or an LA2A? It's common that you need to send the item back to the manufacturer or a specialist, which in itself takes 5 days. Then many tech departments will have the item waiting in a queue for a month before they can even look at it.

Net result? The "buyer protection" becomes a farse- unless you have direct access to a qualified tech who can respond immediately.

I was interested in finding out if other people have come across this problem?

Powerful laptops that are silent/close to it...do they exist?

Hi all,

I just bought a new HP laptop, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, i7 2.5 GHz (HP Omen).

I love love love love everything about it except for the fan noise. It is generally omnipresent. When I first boot up the computer, it will be off for a few minutes, which feels like such a breath of fresh air.

Soon enough, though, it will kick in at a low level and stay there, which is affecting my ability to track with integrity. Start adding audio tracks/plugins, and it kicks into "Tier 2", which really starts to get unpleasant. At full blast this thing is a cross between my grandma's vacuum cleaner and a 747 idling on the runway.

I realize that many of you may want to advise me to get a MBP, and while I am getting dangerously close to that point (despite the extra $$$ it will cost), I have been a PC lifer so far and would prefer to stay that way, if possible. And from what I understand, MBPs make fan noise as well! I realize that MBAs are quite silent...but they lack the power/resources I am looking for (at least 16GB RAM and at least a 512GB SSD).

This issue of fan noise is really sticking in my craw. Any words of consolation/wisdom?

Thanks!

GT100 and HD500 together?

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a good effects/sim unit. I'm looking at either the GT-100 or HD500 or both. I"m a little concerned over the opinions on each unit. Some say the GT100 effects are nice, but lacking in the modeling department, and vice versa for the HD500.

I have the mean to get both units and was wondering if there's a way to utilize each units strengths at the same time? I haven't looked at connectivity options of each. Is there way to to say route your guitar through gt100 effects and into the hd500 amp and cabinet simulators?

Any helps is appreciated. Thanks guys.

TDR / VladG Plugins

Just got free versions of Slick EQ, Kotelnikov, Molot, Limiter No6, Nova-76 and am thinking of grabbing the GE versions of the available ones.

Wondering some opinions on these plugs from other users. I have been using the Fab Filter Pro-L Limiter and was going to buy the Sonnox Limiter, but first wondering how the Limiter No6 compares. Is it as high quality as the Sonnox? It seems like there's a lot of components to it that may be able to get a superior result once learned, though wondering how the general quality of the plugin holds up to other top software limiters.

The Slick EQ looks really cool. I have a bunch of plugin EQs, but I really like the high pass filter on the Slick, and the autogain option is great to be able to make EQ moves and not be influenced by the "louder is better" experience. How does Slick EQ compare to Equlibrium or Pro Q2 in terms of quality?

Wondering what uses people are using the Molot and the Kotelnikov for? Is the Kotelnikov mostly a 2-bus/mastering compressor? It's pretty transparent right? I usually like to use compressors for color and effect moreso than dynamics control, but wondering what applications users are enjoying the Kotelnikov for. Same for the Molot?

The Nova-76 also looks great but I'm trying to wrap my head around the concept. Is anyone just using it as an EQ, or is it mostly suited for dynamic EQ/multiband compression? Will have to read the manual a bit more for this one, though again, wondering what kind of uses people are finding the Nova-76 to excel at?

Thanks!

Curious to stop particles

Hi

So to save some pennies I've been looking into making some bass traps, I'm pretty confident in my approach but I was curious about tiny airborn particles.

I've basically moved all my studio stuff into my main bedroom where currently my 8 month old still sleeps with us.

When he moves into his room there is a possibility that another one might be in our room shortly after.

I was wondering whether covering the bass trap frame with grease proof paper before cotton would help with particles that would escape.

Good idea bad idea? Any advice

Thank you

Yamaha MG16XU for electronic music

I need a new mixer, and I'm looking at the Yamaha MG16XU. It seems to offer amazing value for the money imo. I'll be using it only in the studio, and for synths only (one input for vocals, though).

A huge plus are the four aux outputs, which I'll use to send audio to two pairs of Kaoss Pads, and then back into the mixer on two dedicated stereo inputs. I'll be sampling the results into a sampler (atm a Korg Electribe ESX and Yamaha su700, soon the Electribe 2 sampler) and into my computer.

A couple of questions:

1 - what do you think about the sound quality?

2 - would you recommend other mixers (of the same size) instead?

3 - how does the MG16XU compare to the Yamaha MGP16X?

Thanks :)

btw: I'll also be using my old Yamaha MG10/2 eventually as a sub mixer into two of the inputs, as I'll be needing more inputs. I think this will be an ok solution, instead of buying an even bigger mixer at this point. Feel free to disagree with me on here :)

PSU 520 vs 650 vs 750 for music production

Hello everyone,

I'm building a system for music production. I'll be using cubase 8 pro with very heavy sample libraries. I'm just not sure what kind of PSU I need. My build is:

1. Intel core i7 5820k

2. CPU FAN: Noctua NH-U12S cooler

3. Motherboard: Asus x99-a

4. Ram: Crucial DDR4 8x4 2133

6. SSD Drive:Crucial mx100 250 gb

7. HD Western Digital black 3T

8. Soundcard: RME Babyface (usb 2)

In case I don't do video editing and gaming, just music, what kind of PSU do I need? Someone told me to go for 750W that will be future proof, do you think it's overkill?

About budget for PSU, I would invest in a reasonably good PSU to keep the system stable

Thanks in advance!

Arturia Minibrute faulty filter mode and SUCKY!! SUPPORT!!

I've read the forums and others have had the filter mode knob go bad on their units. Has anyone that had this issue had any response from Arturia?

My first support ticket was Nov 2014 and they responded quite fast and said its a known issue and someone from the US team will contact me.

Since then nothing. I have emailed them numerous times through the support system and their system shows all the communication attempts.

Minibrute is basically useless without the filter working properly.

I find it ridiculous that Arturia can launch and new audio interface, a new Keylab 88 all with in the last 2 months and completely ignore support for the stuff they already sold us.

If someone from Arturia reads this...PM ME!!!

It sucks that such a great soft and hardware synth manufacturer has to suck this bad at very basic stuff like a simple email with an update or directions for RMA or something. Is it a one man show over there?

If you have had this issue, were you able to fix it on your own, if so how.

Interfaces under $200 with the best converters?

We're building a small in-house studio at the ad agency I work at. We only need a single input for a mic and I already have a GAP Pre73 slotted as the pre. We'll only need stereo 1/4" TRS & a headphone out....super minimal I/O's.

We plan on upgrading later, but were just wondering what kind of interface would be ideal for around $200. Since this is commercial stuff, we want to focus most of the budget on sound quality/good converters. We do most of our projects out-of-house at local studios--this is just for easy and quick touch-ups, and clients do come through to visit.

I've been checking out these, but am open to other suggestions.

Scarlett, PreSonus Audiobox, Roland Duo-Capture, M-Audio, AVID, and the Steinberg UR-22 have most of my attention at the moment.

We currently run Cubase 8, but might go PT in the near future.

Any thoughts?

THANKS!!

Dubbing from cassette: low quality

Hi!

I have a Technics RS-X40W cassette deck as part of a system (Technics 315-series). Now, I recently started using this again to make my own mixtapes and to record from radio and I was quite positively surprised by the sound quality. I tested recording from a cd to cassette, then did some A/B-testing, switching back and forth between the cd player and the cassette deck, playing the same track - and I had difficulties hearing any differences (except for a bit more noise from the cassette; this was without the Dolby NR).

This deck is a double cassette deck but only one tape can be used for recording, so I use tape 1 for my playback and tape 2 for my recording. As I mentioned the recordings sound great but there are however some problems with tape 2:

First of all, when dubbing from tape 1 to tape 2 there is a large step down in sound quality where I can hear clear differences between the original tape recording and the new one. I figure this can't be the expected behaviour since when using tape 2 to record from any other source (radio, vinyl, cd) there isn't any significant loss of quality, and neither is it when playing back from tape 1.

Second, playback from tape 1 is supposed to work according to the manual, but often there is either an annoying noise (kind of like what you hear when plugging a headphone cable in and out or when touching a condenser microphone while recording) or absence of one channel (left or right).

I would really appreciate some advice on how to best tackle this problem and if there's anything I could try and fix on my own or if need to have it looked at by a professional.

I probably should add that I don't think that there's a problem with the heads, since I have cleaned them properly using cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol (99,5%) as according to repairfaq.org. Of course, it's possible there's a problem with the playhead of tape 2, one that isn't fixed by cleaning.

I'm very curious to see what others might say about this matter - if I'll be able come close to a diagnose or not.

Thanks in advance!

Orchestrated Hip Hop

lately ive been trying to make some orchestral/symphonic stuff but ive been running into a couple of problems that gets me frustrated and makes me just quit and do something else all together and i was hoping you guys might be able to help me overcome some of my roadblocks. when i try to make songs of this style, i find that all of my melodies end up coming out sad, and i dont know why...i have a good foundation of music theory but not a "know all in depth" understanding but enough so that i can talk and hold a conversation with most while understanding whats going on, but i dont know why all my stuff comes out sounding sad...at first i thought maybe it was because my progressions just went from a higher notes to lower ones, but even when i switch it up it just doesnt do what i'd like... everyones advice to producers is to find their own style and im starting to fear that MY style is depressing sh** because it just comes naturally to me.. but i overall am looking to make tracks like these http://ift.tt/1BF5JRy

or

http://ift.tt/1Af84v5

if any one has any advice as to what i can do, if theres someone out there thats good at dissecting beats that could break it down for me, or if anyone knows/can help me understand why i keep pushing out sad sounding songs any advice would be greatly appreciated

will .4 decibel variance be noticeable?

I had this discussion with a Focusrite tech.. I am sort of questioning the accuracy, so I wanted to get other opinions

[EMAIL]

I have been measuring the mic levels and the input levels of the Saffire 56.

I've noticed that the levels are slightly off for each one..

I will run a test tone at -18db through all of the inputs and the

signals all return slightly different levels on the saffire

mixcontrol.. I have all the knobs turned completely lowest ..the only 2

that are similar are 3 and 4 microphone level..

all the other ones are

off as much as .4db of one another!

[FOCUSRITE REPLY]

The gain pots will have some variance, but it should not be greater than .1-.4 dBu. A difference of .4 dbu should not be able to skew your stereo image at it is only a 4% change in amplitude. The minimum threshold for a noticeable change in volume is 12%.

I would recommend that you use your signal generator to calibrate the inputs gain so that all channels read the same in MixControl.

What do you guys think of this? When I send a kick out and back in through inputs, I can clearly hear a difference in the stereo image..

1) The levels are different in the L and R channels.. for example, something that should be -7.4 L and -7.4 R come back in as -7.6 L and -7.5 R

2) I hear a general loss of clarity, very similar to chorusing ...

Im about to acquire an 80's Amek Angela "Blue"...it has been use sporadically since new, looks almost new, low hours, but has been sitting.

Should I recap the PSU before I even fire it up?

Im buying it unheard, but I know its history and he owner is a friend. Another friend ( a local qualified tech) recapped the master section several years ago and said the console is worth buying, and I am getting it for a good price indeed.

Called the tech friend but he is not in town.

Is it safe to fire the old Angela up? Been in storage, wrapped up, for 4 years.

Does Waves update its plugins?

I was thinking of getting the SSL 4000 bundle or the Platinum bundle but I know these plugins have been around for years and I'm sure technology has improved.

Jupiter 8 Waveforms/ emulating a Jupiter 8

So mainly I'm looking for a link to an image of the waveforms that a Roland Jupiter-8 produces - Particularly the square and saw waves.

Beyond that, if anybody is familiar with making "jupiter-esque" patches on the Akai Miniak and has some advice, I'd love to hear it.

How easy is it to damage my amplifier or speakers?

Hi! I have never been good in electronics so I would like to hear some opinions from you about a situation where I left my audio system in a room with a bunch of drunk guys and they started using it when I left the room for some time. Now I am worried that they did some damage to it.

It happened a few days ago that I had to leave these guys alone for about an hour. This set up consists of a mixer that sends the signal to the amplifier which has 4 speakers conected to it in a parallel way,so a cable with speakon connector runs into 1 speaker and from that speaker a cable goes to the 2nd one. When I left the room the mixer power was unplugged , the amp was turned off and the cable was disconnected from the first speaker (the other end still connected to the amp) on both channels.

These guys were drunk and they know absolutely nothing about electronics or amplifiers or speakers or what is safe to do with stuff like this and what is not so I am worried that they abused my stuff. While I was away they somehow managed to plug the cable back to the speakers , plug the power cord back to the mixer and they turned on the amplifier and turned up the volume.

When I got back after an hour they immediately turned it off. Unfortunately since that time I did not have a chance to test if it sounds different than before. but it really bothers me.

So my main queston is , how likely is it that they damaged something in the amp or the speakers when they plugged these together somehow and turned up the volume?

I don't really know how easy it is to damage these stuff or what means real danger to them. for example I can imagine a scenario where they turned on the amp and had no sound. Then they managed to plug in the mixer , turned it's volume to the max because they still had no sound. After that they found the cables hanging from the amp and tried to plug in the speakon to the speakers trying to fit it in place not knowing how to do it , turning it left to right with the volume still to the max till finally they locked it in place somehow. I don't know how they did it exactly cause noone told me but I'm sure it was something like that. Could they cause damage that way?

The thing that bothers me the most is that my amp has some problem with it's fan. 90% of the time when I power it on the fan does not spin nicely. It spins making a horrible crackling noise as if it was about to fall apart. I think it is because of dust mainly. When this happens I gently stop the fan for a sec with my hand and then let it spin again. I do this for a few times(2-4) and after that it spins normally pretty quietly. So it is almost certain that when they turned the amp on the fan acted badly again and they did not fix it like I do all the time. So they used it with the fan being unstable and I am worried that it does not cool the amp well enough this way. When I arrived I wanted to check for burnt smell but I could not because the guys smoked so much in that room.

So could you please give me your toughts about this whole situation? I don't know what type of protection is in these kind of amps and speakers if there is any at all. How likely is that they damaged something? And what signs of damage should I look for when I will have time to check my system? I know I am a noob in electronics but I really don't know if I am overreacting it or not so please don't be too harsh with me. And I'm sorry if my english is not too well I'm not a native speaker.

My devices are pretty basic stuff but I really love this system and it served me really well for many years now.

The amp is a Konig AMP10000-KN with 2x 500 W. this one here PA-AMP10000-KN - K

2 of the 4 speakers are Omnitronic DX1022 10" Passive 200/400W. this type Omnitronic DX1022 10" Passive DJ PA Speaker- 400 Watts.

The other two are a pair of a different type but they are also 200/400W speakers but with larger woofer. And the mixer is a behringer Xenyx 802 like this Behringer XENYX 802 Mixer.

Connecting bass/guitar amp head to cabinet in iso booth

Just thinking.. Would some sort of patchbay be ok to connect the amp head to the cabinet? Head outside iso booth, cab inside. I was thinking of making a small panel with xlrs, 1/4 etc to connect from/to the booth. (Still haven't built it tho, just brain storming/planning, to have a clear idea about what to do  )

Thanks in advance!

Slaving an iMac to a Mac Pro: VSTi and Video Playback.

I'm in the process of setting up a scoring studio with the main host being a Mac Pro. Since I have a 27" iMac laying around, i'm wondering if it would be possible to slave it?

It would be cool if I could utilize the iMac's processing to run some VSTis and possibly also as a monitor for video playback during sessions running on the Mac Pro. Would this even be possible? If so, would this be done through ethernet?

Thanks

Next purchase for high-end home studio mix room

Hi,

Couple of years back I decided to concentrate on building a strong foundation of gear for my bedroom studio where I mainly mix and overdub guitars, vocals and percussion. I did this so I could learn the basics of classic gear and understand their sounds and strengths.

I record and sum through a Focusrite 2802 and Apogee Ensemble, monitor with Focal Solo 6's and compress with UA 1176's and an LA2A in a (not so great) room treated with GIK acoustic panels.

To fully utilise the 2802 I'm thinking of ditching the Ensemble for an Antelope Orion which would also give me additional patch points to use as DAW inserts for my growing outboard.

The position I currently find myself in is wondering which piece of gear to add next that will be most constructive for my work.

I've thought about a Bricasti M7 as a lot of my mixing duties would benefit from better ambience in the recorded tracks and I know this unit excells at doing so.

Tied in with mixing there's the desire for outboard EQ, this is a bit of a minefield and I've toyed with the idea of diving into 500 series API's, Harrison's and the like. The new Warm Audio EQP-WA is also on my radar.

Having recently watched "Sound City" for the hundreth time (you can see where this is going)... the Neve 1084 is also something I'm lusting after (maybe a 1081 granted I'd be mixing)

As you can see I'm a bit spoilt for choice and obviously can't afford everything (yet) so I'm mainly looking for advice on which gear your experience tells you would be the most benefit to me. My mind says Bricasti but my heart wants 1084's for tracking and mixing mojo.

As always, I appreciate any opinions or advice you care to give. I understand this isn't a new topic so it means a lot if you care to take the time.

Kind Regards,

Shaun

P.S: If you require more information regarding my background I'm a guitarist, drummer and bass player of 15 years and have played in bands just as long. I've studied Music Tech at University (College for those stateside) and started recording when I was 16. I currently earn no money from this but would like to one day provide a cost effective on-location recording/studio-based mixing solution to local bands. Buy cheap, buy twice and K.I.S.S. are two mantras I try to adhere to.

Focusrite Forte boosted highs?

So I've been using a Focusrite Forte for a few months now. I really like the clarity, but what I'm starting to notice is a really bright top end, almost like there's been a hefty boost at 6k and 12K. It makes everything tracked through it sound airy and boosted. Comparing back to some songs I did with a Mackie Blackjack, I prefer the tone of that interface because it's darker sounding and doesn't reveal such an extreme amount of excruciating detail. Sort of the difference between a nice dynamic mic and a bright condenser. It's sort of like the Forte makes everything sound extremely digital, where the Blackjack hides some details and the tracks come out more flattering because of that. Is my thinking off on this? Surely more detail should be desired?

Wouldnt hearing commercial mixes on computer speakers still give a good reference?

I remember Dave Pensado recommended having a commercial mix(basically a big recent hit) in you mix to play so it can give you a reference DB wise and whether your mix is muddy or too bright which made sense to me to compare it with you mix that youre working on.

The thing is wouldnt hearing a commercial mix like some big time hits on ANY SPEAKERS give you a sense of what a commercial mix should sound like ON THE SAME SPEAKERS YOUR HEARING IT FROM? If you are mixing on those same speakers than I dont see how you cant have a mix sound like a great commercial mix when you can always compare your mix to a commercial one on your own speakers.

Even Manny Marroquin said he believes that it doesnt matter what you are mixing on AS LONG AS YOU KNOW THAT SPEAKERS/MONITOR.

Yes I know that computer speakers some of them could be colored but again you have a commercial mix as a stereo track in your mix to solo and play to always compare to, so that will be your guide on the computers speakers so I dont see how you CANT make great mixes on computer speakers.

What say you guys?

Native Instruments Kontrol arpeggiator doesn't output midi

1", 2", 3"... What do I need for home studio?

From what I've been reading about home studio and music recording, it seems my first step is to do some acoustical treatment to my music room before I start recording. I understand bass trapping the corners and spot treating the walls with foam, but I'm so new to this that I need help and advice from people with more knowledge. So, here are a few things I am curious about...

1. My music room is really just a spare bedroom. Do I want 1", 2", or 3" foam? I understand it depends on frequencies, but would 2" work fine, or would it be overkill?

2. Is there a difference between foam that says "STUDIO" vs. "Home, Commercial, or Industrial"? Shouldn't all acoustic foam work the same? This is important because it could REALLY cut down on cost.

3. If a company says they vacuum seal their foam to reduce shipping costs, and "to let it expand for a couple days before installing", should this raise any sort of red flag? Shouldn't acoustic foam be stiff, or nah?

1", 2", 3"... What do I need for home studio?

Studio Electronics SE-1X won't retain patches after being powered off....

Having some trouble with my SE-1X. I'm able to save patches to the RAM and cycle through and play them back as long as I keep the machine on, however; once I turn the machine off all patches in the RAM are wiped free. The ROM, banks 1-4, are fine and always there but the RAM wipes every time I turn the machine off & on.

Any idea why this might be happening and how I might go about fixing it?

Workhorse//Darkhorse

Good day, slutz.

I am in the market for a workhorse vocal/acoustic GTR microphone… I work mainly in the indie/pop rock genre. Typically I am using either a Great River NV1 or an Avalon 737 as my mic-pre in these applications.

I've got three microphones on my radar:

:::AT 4050:::

:::Lauten Clarion FC-357:::

:::Telefunken CU-29:::

(The Telefunken being at the top of my budget)

I am looking for something smooth and that can take EQ well. Obviously any microphone is going to react differently depending on the source and placement so I guess I'm looking to hear which of these microphones you find to work more often than not. Also, if I am overlooking any serious contenders in this price range please let me know.

My conflict…

This goddamn Slate Virtual Microphone System is looking like it could be released fairly soon, and I have to admit, the concept is extremely appealing given my budget. However, because I mix mostly ITB, the idea of almost everything being "virtual" is making me feel… well… I don't know… uncomfortable maybe??? Do I keep on with a real chain or should I embrace new technology?

Kind of a two part question, with a dash of rant.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.
