Hi all
http://ift.tt/1cz9Wv0
I did a live chamber music concert recording on Sunday in a church featuring mezzo, piano trio and a speaker.
Due to the venue wasn't open until an hour before the concert I've had to rush through setting up my gear in 30-40 minutes prior to the concert began. I used my default 4-mic set up (with the middle two as 20cm A-B) along the same horizontal line (outer mics about 1m on either side of the A-B).
Microphones were about 2m from the Yamaha C3 grand.
Mics:
1) 2 x Sennheiser MKH 8020 omni (the middle A-B)
2) 2 x Line Audio OM1 omni
Recorded using Audient ASP880 preamp (to power 2)), and connected to Prism Sound Lyra 2 (via ADAT 4 mode, and also powered 1) directly).
Originally recorded at 96 kHz 24-bit.
Issues:
1) Violin too thin or quiet - this was a genuine case of didn't know where she sat until the 2nd half began (as per the recording link). If I knew in advance then I'd position the microphones differently;
2) Some felt the mezzo solo wasn't captured well enough
I'm just wondering what to do with 2) - voice recording isn't my strongest point and this was my first time recording solo vocal:
- do I add 1 or 2 more SDC microphones closer to the voice? I have a pair of Rode NT55 just in case. Being a live concert I'm not sure if the audience will be distracted by the sight of more microphones
- do I use LDC instead or Line Audio OM1 for instance? I have SE4400a pair, AKG C214 pair, and Rode NT1-A pair
Any feedback will be very welcome as the cellist featured in the recording asked me to record again in June...
Thanks guys.
