Foley mixing question

Hello folks, I had a question in regards to mixing Foley footsteps. How would you deal with a scene that has dialogue and some footsteps interweaved between the lines. The reason I ask is because I want to achieve that clean footstep sound that is so desirable in the Foley side of things. Would you bring in the steps track and sync them to be on top for definition? Would you leave the original ones, even if they are sorta echoey or not really "defined"? Keep in mind there is no possibility of doing ADR so just curious how its done.



I know its a basic question but, do Foley footsteps get mixed in with the original? are they meant to totally replace the location steps, do you use them in some scenes and not others.



I have looked everywhere for an answer and cant find anything on how the actually Foley steps and clothing passes get mixed into a film.
