We get onboard compressors and gates with an SSL, but a bunch of dbx comps (which are closest to the SSL's channel comps from what I've read) and some Drawmer gates can take care of that. We also have SSL buss compressor racks to take care of the Quad compressor. That leaves some HP + LP filters which most midrange consoles don't have, but there are plenty of rack EQs that have them. The only thing left is automation, but we've got DAWs for that.
The pro of an SSL is that almost everything you need is in front of you. The only con I can think of is price. The pro of a midrange console + outboard is you can tweak your rig more. The big con of it is that it's hell. Everything is in a separate rack, you'll have tons of patching to do, and it may kill your workflow.
Is there anyone out there who would actually prefer to go the non-SSL route even if you had the cash for an SSL? If so, why?
