Pro Tools Midi Issue

while using the pencil tool to insert midi notes, I'm not getting any audio



it's fine during playback and I can hear the notes I'm playing on my controller but when I try and pencil them in, nothing



I've scoured my preferences, midi settings, etc and can't seem to figure out the issue



any ideas?
