I've been producing for a while now but didn't get anything done lately. I still feel like I'm getting nowhere. What a piece of sh*t! LOL! I know a little about music theory to get me going but the most challenging phase for me is the drum. I get hang up on the drums most of the time. When I first started producing, I usually just place all the drums on the same key - C key. But as I got better, I change them around. I would put the kick on C, Snare on C#, Clap on D, Hi hats on D# etc. Even now that I did this they still don't sound right. I get the impression that you must hit the kick lower than the snare right? For instance your kick need a lower tone than the snare. The snare has hit on a higher tone. Either this is or the way I choose my samples are just plain wrong. Selecting sounds are so difficult to me. My questions for you producers is how do you know which samples is right? Some people say you just have to trust your ears, that's true, but what do I need to listen to? And how do you producers go about laying down your drums. Do you lay the kick in C key, Snare in C# or do you place then all on C key? I think the tone does make a difference and if you don't have the right tone then your beat will not sound right.
