After lurking in Gearslutz for longer than I care to admit, and reading every single article on compression I could get my hands on, I decided on the Summit TLA-50 as my very first compressor.
My initial impressions (and keep in mind here, I am a compression novice) is that the circuit is entirely too noisy. I like the softness of the knee, the analog "mojo", and the expansiveness of the sound. I do feel like the high end is attenuated too much, despite what to my ears seems like a high noise floor. But I'm an absolute sucker for tube warmth.
Should I send it back and get something else that is quieter? My main applications are recording male indie vocals, bass, guitar, and anything that will be improved by a trip through the circuit.
My preamp is an ART TPS II. Yes, ugh.
What's a guy to do? Get something like the WA 76? Save up for a complete recording channel?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Head explosion imminent.

Did I go wrong with Summit TLA-50?
