this has been a long road. short version. my i7 950 machine is dying. tried mac mini. unimpressed. tried dell z420 workstation. unimpressed. so eating crow here and going back to a DIY machine. (said i never would again)
here is a parts list. i invite any comments. : )
Intel Core i7-4790K
ASUS ATX SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK2
16G total Kingston Value RAM 4GB 1600MHz PC3-12800 DDR3 Non-ECC CL11 DIMM
EVGA GeForce 210 Passive 1024 MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 DVI/HDMI/VGA
comes to about $750 when using my old parts.
I have several mechanical drives from my old system. also have new corsair hx 850 PSU and case.
here is my thinking.
the processor should be a decent (>= 30%) increase in power. at a decent price point/value.
since the motherboard is the most likely thing to fail i want to get a reliable one. i have learned from my current motherboard failure (socket lga 1366) that replacing an old board doesn't make sense. (old 1366s are more expensive now then in 2010!) so when the MB crashes the whole system might have to go. not sure how the asus tuf series holds up. they do have a 5 year warranty. it's a best guess. i find no data.
the ram is based on a decent value from a good company.
the video card. not sure i even need it. the board has it. guess i could wait and see. but if i do get one i like the idea of a heatsink to keep things quiet. with a fan they can die a noisy death and then the card goes with them. with a heatsink perhaps they can go from excessive heat. i am of the opinion that video cards also have high failures rates. is a reason not to go with on board GPU that it eats into system ram and other resources?
for a minute i considered a 2011 socket. but that would be maybe 400 more (board and CPU) and overkill. my i7 950 had always been enough.
i'm not counting on the board making it past 3-4 years so going socket 2011 also seems silly as the system is dependent on the board.
thoughts?
