Okay so I'm a singer-songwriter and I'm producing my own EP by myself, and one of my songs has many similarities to the first verse and chorus of the song 'I'm a mess' by Ed Sheeran.
I want to aim for a similar sort of sound with the recorded product, just not sure the best way to track it to set myself up with a mixing process that isn't impossible. (I'll be using just acoustic guitar and vocals)
My immediate thinking is to use a spaced pair stereo miking technique on the guitar with small diaphragm condensers, and use a DI as well just for those cheeky twangs.
Then on vocals I wasn't sure what microphone to use because I will be going from quiet and intimate, to loud and resonant. I don't want to move further away from the mic because I want minimal room noise (I'll add convolution reverb later because a room with the right sound is not available to me).
I will be using the recording studios at the Uni where I study (Southampton Solent, England) and I'm not sure what the entire collection of mikes consists of, all I've seen so far are the mikes they keep in the control rooms which are Rode NT1A, Rode NT2A's, Shure D112, AKG C451B's, SM57's, SM58's, and some Sennheiser MD 421 II's.
Any microphones you would recommend (I'm thinking SM7 and will ask about it).
Be nice, I'm still a major rookie. :)
