I am finishing up some tracks in the folk/Americana genre. As I'm starting to mix things it kind of struck me that I haven't really used a lot of plugins on this.
The tracks are:
1&2 - stereo acoustic guitar (1959 Martin OO-21 mic'd with a Mojave MA-201 FET and a Neumann 141).
3- Vocal (Mojave MA-200 tube mic into the UA-610. I also used an SE reflection filter that a lot of people hate, but really works well for me).
4- Bass - Reissue Fender 70s Jazz through a 1964 Fender Dual Showman. I mic'd a single 15 cabinet with a Shure Beta 52A through the UA-610 and kept the volume low. I have LaBella Deep Talkin' flats on it.
5- Lap Steel - I used an old Gibson korina model from the 50s through a Roland RE-201 and a 1949 Fender Deluxe. I used a Mojave MA-200 on the guitar amp.
6- Electric Guitar - I used different guitars for different sections then I comped them onto one track. A 1950 Fender Broadcaster, a 1957 Gretsch 6120 and a 1958 Gibson Les Paul Standard. I used a 1955 Fender Deluxe for everything except the 6120 on which I used an old Gretsch 6160 Chet Atkins amp. I used the MA-200 through the 610 on everything.
7- Electric Guitar - 1956 Gibson Les Paul Standard (P-90s) through a Chandler Digital Echo and a 1964 Fender Tremolux and a Marshall 2x12 mic'd with a Shure SM-57 into the 610.
8,9,10 - Drums - I am not a drummer, but I picked up one of those little Gretsch Catalina kits for my studio. One thing I did was buy nice hardware (DW 5000) used. I used old 1970s Zildjian hi hats and crash ride.
I ran the drums through the Urei 7510. I used a pair of MA-200 mics on the kit and a Beta 52A on the kick.
I did some organ tracks and strings. I used Komplete for these.
I kind of worked to move mics around and did a lot of testing before getting into the final tracks.
I used some outboard gear, but nothing crazy:
1- Warm Audio WA76 ($600)
2- Urei 535 and 562 EQs ($200 total)
3- Lexicon PCM-81 ($450)
4- Lexicon PCM-91 ($500)
The only plugins I used were the Waves VEQ 4 on the bass drum and snare, the SSL Duende buss compressor on the master buss and a couple instances of the generic EQs that come with ProTools to cut some low end here and there.
For me, it's been pretty easy to integrate the hardware into my system because I'm using PTHD, but when I'm comparing costs (I own Waves Mercury Bundle).
After hearing how good the tracks from this record have come out I'm thinking about dumping the Mercury bundle and buying a nice EQ and buss compressor. I think starting with guitars, amps and drums that sound really good and are well maintained and then using a small collection of nice mics and a decent pre really has been the way to go for me.
I like a lot of plugins. For a long time I had a UAD, but it was the 1 version and I can't use it in my Mac Pro. That's when I went Mercury.
I was wondering if anyone could suggest a nice stereo buss compressor and Neve style eq that won't break the bank. I was thinking about buying another WA76, but I honestly don't thing I would like them as a buss comp.
