I recently had two, 2-prong outlets switched to 3-prong, grounded outlets by an electrician. He didn't run a ground down to the electrical panel, but did a cheaper method of grounding that would avoid him having to "tear up the walls" and he said it would be fine for my equipment. The outlets read grounded when a surge protector is plugged into them.
I noticed I was getting a lot of hum from one of the outlets when I plugged an instrument cable into a speaker loadbox (that I use for recording guitars as speaker & mic simulator). Now, I didn't even power on the loadbox, but could hear it humming in my monitors. I just had an instrument cable plugged from the loadbox's output to the input of my audio interface. If I plug directly into the audio interface the hum is gone.
My computer, monitors, etc. are on a power strip connected to a separate outlet than the loadbox. I plugged everything into the same power strip and the hum is gone. Is this ground loop hum that I was experiencing before? Is it necessary for everything to be plugged into the same power strip? Should I be worried about the way these outlets were grounded? Thanks in advance...
