Advice/Opinions needed for basis of studio!

Hi people!

After thinking and doubting for over two years I have finally gotten my head around and made the decision to seriously start building my studio with some analog gear.

If you would like to know why: The hands-on experience certainly sparks my creativity, i'm really into raw (I love distortion/tape saturation/noise) house/techno and i know that this sound originates from the use of machines, i've always liked to "collect" stuff, and i really like the idea of limiting myself after producing with software for a few years now. I have thought this through :)

Anyway, i have saved up some money over the past couple of months meaning i now have about 1500 euro's to spend on machines. I don't necessarily want to spend this all at once, but i do need some advice or opinions on some choices to create the right foundation for a studio like this.

My current setup is fairly simple:

- A strong Macbook Pro

- A 49 key midi keyboard

- Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 soundcard

- Dynaudio BM5A's

I won't be able to give my room proper treatment for the coming months because i will be living in berlin till next summer and currently live in Spain.

My goal is not to go full analog (atleast, that isn't what i want as of now). I am so used to working with Ableton and i really like the software, so what i would like to do is go hybrid - mainly using Ableton to record/arrange/process and using the main source of sounds from outboard gear. I would, though, like to be able to jam without using the computer too much in the creative process eventually.

Anyway, i was trying to get my head around the foundation needed to make a studio like this, this is what i was thinking:

- A proper mixing desk which will last me for a little while. I was thinking of a Mackie 1604, would this be a good choice? It does fit my budget (They go for around 350 euro's here, second hand)

- A bigger soundcard to go with the desk? - need some advice on this(!) How many channels would i need?

Will this make a good basis or do i need more?

Some things on the wantlist for when i have the foundation down is a tape recorder (Revox B77), a System 1 for the sh-101 plug-out (My favourite synth), Maybe a TX81z and a Poly 800, a 303 clone and some drummachines (RZ1/R70/707). Just to give you an idea of what kinds of machines i'm looking to use in the long run, even though it will probably take months/years to collect all of it.

I hope i explained well enough and would like to hear some advice on building a good/solid foundation, keeping in mind i have a student's budget!

Thank you for reading guys and looking forward to your responses :)

Bob
