Rode NT2-a and MJE Hulk 990

so i had the rode nt2-a for over 5 years as my main and best LC mic. i like it and i've always been happy with the results. than people began telling me that my sounds sometimes are and were a bit harsh in the highs and after reading a lot of negative opinions here about the highs of the rode nt2-a, i started to look around for a "darker" mic.

the mje hulk 990 cought my interest as beeing a poor mans u87 and it beeing a bit "darker" met my wishes. i bought it. i did some tests between the rode and the hulk in my homestudio: vocals, spoken words and acoustic guitar.

listening to the audio the 2 mics are veeeery similar, the rode just seems to have a tiny bit more meat in the lows and a tiny tiny bit more air. sibilance i didn't notice a difference worth noting.

than i looked at the frequency grafic from my sound samples and they confirmed my impressions: the rode has some +1 db from 100-300hz, +1 db at 7khz and a high shelving +3 db from 9khz upwards which explaines the more air.

but nothing a good eq couldn't align if wished.

so all in all the 2 mics are really almost the same. i can't say the one or other is more 3d or detailed.

what do i learn? never believe the internet. never buy without trying - although that's not always easy ... maybe my ears are not to schooled. maybe i would have to spend more money if i really want a different sounding mic.

in the end: both are very good mics! anyone wanna chime in with their own expierences on both mics?
