What high-end recording mic for tenor sax? I want full body with natural detail, no edge or harshness. Is a valve LDC that's great for vocals also great for tenor sax? And then what pre? Ideally if I could go direct into my Apollo or an Apogee I could stay more mobile, but I'd consider an outboard pre if it will be significantly better.
I'm a pro sax player in multiple genres, putting together my mobile personal studio, and obviously the tenor sax sound is primary. I've auditioned most of the $1.5-$2k ribbons, and among them I've settled on SE RNR1 as my favorite for body and tone, but I'd still like more detail. I will spend more for the best choice.
I don't want harshness or edge, but I do want detail. If I had to pick a favorite recorded tenor sax sound, one example would be Sonny Rollins on tunes St. Thomas, Tune Up, etc. from the classic Blue Note era.
Thanks for any help
