Hey Slutz-
I'm a longtime lurker (something like 8+ years.) Anyhow, finally registered....because, because of all the wonderful things you's does.
So my situation. I've finally liberated my apt. recording setup from being a second class citizen to my video editing, that gets the paying work. I'm combining forces with my workspace mate and finally setting up a purpose built music room.
He's donating Mackie monitors and an iMac plus gear. I've got a MOTU traveler and an Allen and Heath Scepter I literally found on the street. The sad perks of artists and musicians bailing on Brooklyn.
Together we've got 3 mono output synths, 3 stereo output synths and V-drums (mono, I believe) plus an assortment of other gear; a few mics, a DI, headphone amp and a few midi controllers. I anticipate recording with a handful of friends with some of their gear, mostly synths. It'd be great to have everything wired up to go for multitracking without having to plug and unplug. I anticipate most of the recording we'll be doing as synths and other stuff direct and probably lower volume monitoring and headphones to not overtly piss off neighbors.
It's looking like 4 mono inputs, 3 stereo inputs (6 more channels) and a couple channels of mic pres. The MOTU could potentially handle this with the ADAT input adding another 8 channels. I don't know much about adat and haven't used it so if more are possible let me know.
Finances are tight. I have been looking for a used 8 channel line level A to D adat interface to run the direct outs of the scepter into. Not finding much except the behringer unit, which I'm a bit hesitant to purchase because of the brand's reputation. Used stuff, aphex 142 and a few other units I researched on here seem scarce on ebay.
The Scepter has 12 inputs, the few channels I checked seem fine. The thing smells like cigarettes and has a few scratches but nothing major. Googling my old MOTU it looks like it's not worth more than 200ish. I think from what I gather from the internet the scepter is worth about 500ish.
I'm not against selling it all for something with a lot of inputs like a midas or allen and heath board with USB or firewire.
I hear Phil Ramone really liked the pres on the scepter and in my non-project band I really love tubes, analog, tape and noisey, garagey stuff. As a bass player I've never been in love with the bottom end of the traveler, it's not bad but a little sterile when I've run a bass or analog synth DIed into it. So the scepter's appealing but until now haven't had a space to set it up and really hear it.
What do you guys think as far as options: some kind of A to D adat from the scepter to the MOTU. Sell both and buy something like the Midas and Allan and Heath boards mentioned above?
Does anybody know where to go in NYC to get the scepter cleaned and checked out if needed?
thanks!
