Mic Advice - Tenor Saxophone

Hi guys,

I'm working with a tenor saxophonist/bass clarinetist to record a new album.

The genre is a bit slow/dark jazz. You can listen something from our previous record here:

Trigg & Gusset - Kohilo

On this album, I recorded everything with an MXL V6 (which was OK, but not the best ever). That mic is broken.

So I tried some new microphones yesterday, but have not found a winner yet for the tenor-sax.

Some mics in the test group:

- Rode NT1A

Very bright. All-round, but unbalanced. Lack of depth

- RE20

Warm, natural, but seems to miss a bit sparkling. Great on bass clarinet though

- Golden Age Project R1 MK2

Ribbon sound, good low end. A bit dull in the mids/highs.

- Sennheiser MD241

Too much presence in the mid-high regions. Didn't like this one at all.

- AKG 241

Too much 'loudness', lack of mids.

- Neumann TLM-102

Good all-round sound, but misses character somehow.

Do you guys maybe have some other mic advice for recording tenor sax? I want a natural sound with a good low end, but still have enough presence in the mids/highs.
