Another DAW thread - Specific Question

Hey all,

Black Friday sales got me thinking. I'm currently grinding away at getting to a comfortable technical skill level on guitar, but I'm ultimately interested in writing, composing and recording. I'm as neurotic as I know how to be at this point about sound quality, subtlety, etc, but I'm extremely new with just about everything.

I'm hesitant to simply "jump into" a DAW because I don't want to invest money and find out it's not what I'm looking for. In any case, I've used Studio One before with EastWest instruments and am leaning that way due to its ease of use, capabilities and supposed similarities to things like Logic and Cubase. I currently have a PC.

My question is: Is there any reason not to go for Studio One (probably "Producer" version) over something like the most basic version of Cubase (or Cubase Artist)? I want to be able to use 3rd party instruments and VST's (like EW instruments if I understand correctly), hence my preference towards the non-artist version of Studio One. As of now, with the sale, the Producer version of S1 is the same as the most basic of Cubase. I'm not sure how interested I should be in Reaper, FL Studio or Sonar, but none of them really caught my attention.

Will I be at any sort of disadvantage in the long run, i.e. company not updating, incompatibility issues, etc? Is Cubase or Logic worth spending more on a different computer or worth putting more money towards?

My intended usage will be for recording, composing and mixing genres from metal to subtly ambient tracks.

Thanks in advance, sorry for the long-winded thread!
