So I'm a student, not looking to earn any money from studio work but it's just a (fairly serious) hobby of mine. I'll be earning around $2k doing work this winter. Now here's my question:
I recently was able to try out a large collection of pretty expensive mics, and absolutely fell in love with the Neumann TLM 67. Everything I put through it sounded superb -- acoustic guitar, a guitar amp, vocals, percussion...
Would you pay ~$2000 for a microphone, if you don't make any money from recording music and that it's basically 2 months of pay?
On one hand, I see it as a lifelong investment (it's a Neumann) that I'd make down the road anyway... On the other hand I'm not sure I can justify the difference between the Neumann and my $250 sE 2200a is worth the $1750+. I feel like with that sort of money maybe I'm better off getting some instruments or something.
thoughts?
