Hi,
I am going to be recording (live on location) a greek band consisting of one singer, one bouzouki player and one piano player (electric stage piano). They are accompanied by an orchestra and a choir with:
4 Strings
6 Woodwinds
4 Brass
1 Harp
1 Percussionist with timpani, cymbals and other percussion
40 Singers
I am experienced with Pop/Rock type recordings in the studio and as an instrumentalist in an orchestral situation but not with that type of orchestral live location work, so I guess I am looking for some kind of advice. I will try to articulate questions but basically any hint what to watch out for will be helpful.
1. When talking about the positions of the players with the conductor, what should be concerned. Like for example Percussion behind Brass on the right and woodwinds behind strings on the left. The harp on the left and the choir in the back?
2. The orchestra sounds like the amount of players is imbalanced. (Many singers, few strings). So I will have to spot mike the sections, I guess.
3. Which microphones are going where? I have a good selection on SDC and LDC and dynamics and can borrow some if needed. I have one Ribbon. I won’t have so much time to try things out, because I have only one rehearsal to set up, so I would like to go with proven setups and not risk anything.
Mics available:
5x KM184
2x KM84
2x KM83
2x JZ SDC (don’t know the name), they are some kind of narrow cardioid
1x Avantone CV-28
2x C414
2xTLM103
1x Brauner Valvet
1xU87
1xU89
1xM149
1x Blue Mouse
1x Royer R122
1xSM7b
1xRE20
1xMD441
many MD421, SM57, Audix i5 and D6
However I would like to limit it to 16 channels because that’s what easily available on my mobile setup.
I was thinking about using the KM83 as mains, the C414 and the TLM103 on the choir, 2x KM184 on the Percussion, One KM184 and a U87 on the Woodwinds, the R122 on the Brass, the Valvet or 2xKM184 on strings and the KM84s on Harp and Bouzouki. The Piano will be DI’ed and the Vocal gets an LDC (he will be sitting) or I get the split (SM58) from the house sound guy.

If you have any tips or answers or questions I forgot to ask please tell me, thank you very much.
