Have done some research into using Ableton Live with external gear and the delay compensation process. Most of what I've seen has given me a negative impression of Ableton's ability to deal with this, but am always wary that searching the interwebs on any given subject throws up all the naysayers and none of the people who are getting on just fine. I don't have Ableton yet and am looking at the swap from Cubase, so can't just try myself.
So, what are people's experiences with this? Does it work in practice? The idea of plugging everything into a couple of mammoth soundcards and keeping the workflow smooth is appealing.
More questions:
- how well does it deal with latency from both an external instrument and then a plug-in (e.g. Eq/compressor) monitored on top of that? Does it just throw everything back again automatically to keep all in sync?
- any experience with this and also sending MIDI clock (maybe via Innerclock Systems or Expert Sleepers stuff). Does it also delay the sending of midi/audio so that external sequencers are also kept in sync ok?
