Apollo Optical In and ADC

Hey guys,

Been digging around the web all night and haven't found a satisfactory answer to my question. Wondering if you can help.

I am curious about using the Optical In on my Apollo Twin to expand my potential inputs with either ADAT (8 channels or 4 channels depending on the sample rate) or SPDIF (2 channels). I am aware that by doing this you must use the device sending the optical for the clock as well as the sample rate.

Does that also mean you have to use the ADC of that unit as well? Or will the inputs you insert into the Twin directly use the Apollo's ADC?

I've seen conflicting thoughts on this online. One example is here - http://ift.tt/1oe7qPs

Also this review of the device mention the ability to connect an external ADC through the Optical In. This makes me think the conversion is also dictated to the twin by the master. You have to scroll a bit to get to the part where he mentions it - Universal Audio Apollo Twin Duo - Harmony Central

If chaining a second, cheaper interface like the Focusrite Octopre to the Apollo Twin doesn't let you take advantage of the clock, higher sample rate, or ADC, doesn't that defeat the point of this feature? Is sending ADAT from the Twin the only way to achieve the desired result? And if that's the case, why doesn't the Twin have an optical out? Is this just a way for UA to make you purchase the Apollo Quad?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
