I have a good sounding kit, can manage to use different kinds of decent rooms at my music university and own a saffire pro 40.. I already own a pair of oktava mk012, re20, some shure sm57.. Is it sane for me to buy coles 4038 (i like how they sound) with my soundcard, or should I upgrade preamps first? I can't afford both..
I know, stupid question, but Im kind of in second thoughts land, and I don't want to end up drinking up the money ;D
Please give me suggestions, anything. The sound I mainly going for is kind of Ethan Johns stuffs, but also once in a while I record Mastodon type of stuff.
In other words, (owning mixrack, VCC and other stuff trying to emulate stuff) how much is my win ratio getting good mics first vs getting pres?
