Hi,
I used an XY setup for a jazz quartet that 1. I did not get a sound check with. 2. Asked about the dynamic range of the group, they said they'd keep it pretty even (they didn't) 3. I had to set up in a position I wasn't too happy with, and wound up getting a ton of sax right in the middle of the stereo image (too much in my opinion).
Needless to say, because of this, the dynamics are EVERYWHERE. I tried riding faders for both left and right tracks, but achieving balance was difficult without doing weird stuff to the stereo image. I went on to slap limiters on the XY tracks so I wouldn't clip, increased clipgain for a healthy level on both XY tracks, and started riding the Master Fader.
The balance was great, but holy hell, it is hard to make it sound transparent. Obviously I need to practice a lot more, and I could obviously be a lazy bum with money and use a Vocal Rider but I like the challenge, and the torture.
Right now I'm picking through every little syllable and note. But sometimes I catch myself using my eyes and not my ears.. and fussing with a part for a long time. The usable takes add up to 30 minutes and it's looking tough. I'd like some tips! What would you do? Is there something I'm not thinking about and should consider?
Thanks for any replies.
