Tone control and treble, mids, bass control question...

I bought a Line 6 M5 for playing at home and I'm very happy with it. I've been wondering about something though. The distortion pedals in the M5 have equalizer settings (treble, mids, bass) instead of one tone control like the Big Muff and other distortion pedals. To my knowledge the tone control on a distortion pedal works like the tone control on the guitar. How do I set up treble, mids and bass to correspont to a single tone control. For instance, what is the equalizer's equivalent to a tone knop turned all the way down and all the way up? I figure that low tone means less high frequenzy hence less treble, but what about the mids and bass?
