wow it took me a LONG time to realize (sorry for rant)

these akg 240s only show the mid/highs lol.

... which they show me very well, but

why wouldn't i want headphones that display all the ranges? lol.

... why wouldn't i want some headphones that show exactly what people are going to hear on their consumer grade speakers?

i'll tell you why kids, and i'll also tell you exactly why we all suck at mixing:

this is the BIG secret, just found it out:

because every speaker is so drastically different that it's near impossible to determine how it's going to sound, when played through the wide variation of shit speakers and shit rooms that people listen in. our mixes are doomed before they even begin, because the sound is so drastically mis-represented through our shitty monitors sitting on our desks in our bedrooms.

believe me, we can all get our songs sounding so perfect through our shitty speakers on our bedroom desks, and then we all wonder why the **** it sounds so shitty in our car, or at our buddy's house.

which brings to mind the point of mastering, which i believe to be fine tuning a mix in a better environment than the one it was mixed in, with better speakers, perfect speakers, so that the end result is as true of a sound as possible, and thus will get the best sound possible when it's played back in all the wide range of shit speakers and rooms.

right? mastering isn't hard - it's just a sweet room with sweet speakers. there's no secret, like the commercial guys who have a sweet room and sweet speakers would have you believe. which begs the question.

why the **** aren't i sitting in a mastering environment? why am i not recording and mixing through mastering speakers? because essentially that is what will get the best possible sound through everybody else's speakers, am i right?

and now i have to spend 10g or 100g, or whatever price will justify me wasting my one and only existence doing this stupid shit.

and then i'll show my brother that my in the box mixing really blows the **** out of any other mix that a 'pro' could do, not because of hardware, or the fact that their speakers/room is better,

but because i am in complete control of the SOUND.

because we are artists, aren't we kids. this is why we pursue this skill instead of hiring some loser. if we were painters, we wouldn't have an idea for a picture, and then commission somebody who knows the technical fine points of painting to do it for them, as we lean over their shoulder telling him the 'feel' their going for. **** that. painters are in complete control of the creative process from start to finish. painting is a true reflection of a painter's emotional status. they don't have some analytic nit-picking personality smear their otherwise pure emotional output all to shit. this is why i have chosen to spend ALL this time learning how to mix, which i can do WELL now.

so please congratulate me as i welcome myself to level 2 by realizing the problem with my mixes are now the lack of perfect speakers, in a perfect room.

and it took me a long time to realize this, and won't harm me by letting you all know, hopefully saving you a couple years, possibly decades in the process. this day and age, with digital and plugs, the only thing stopping us home recording artists is our failure to dedicate the majority of our resources to the room and speakers.

because i'll bet you my songs, if mixed even with stock in the box plugs, would blow the **** out of any song/mix you losers could do we were both recording/mixing in a perfect environment.

GOTTA GO.
