Is this possible?

I want to be a really good song writer and I know if I write 8 hours or 6 i will be able to make a really good rap album in less than a year..

Just submitted for Zelab mix contest.

Anyone here do mix contests? I finally went through with one.

I'm super proud of what I did; I sort of obsessed over it. The song is crazy good and well recorded which really helped. I got into some areas I'd never been which scared me, automating a widener on the chorus, using multi-band comp as more of a malleable eq, removing center, etc.

Zelab Mixing Contest

You can head over and check it out; username is "axel754", should be near the "top rated" (like # 27) last I checked, maybe this isn't in error... heppy

I assume it would be in poor taste, maybe even not allowed, to post it on something like SoundCloud? I'd love to get some feedback from good ears here.

Starting out with Vienna Strings...

I'm really interested in finally purchasing some Vienna Strings software but it's clearly a very deep program that should be well-researched before-hand.

Where is a good place to start (i.e. which program is the best option) if I'm looking to just have some basic solo strings or chamber strings to some tracks?

Sweetwater's current "demystified" video on their site is helpful but still would like to hear what some slutz have to say, not just the vienna salesman.

Thanks!

"One more piece" syndrome

We are all slutz and I know many of you suffer from this. Right now, I'm building a solo live rig. I've got all of the gear and cables in place but lack a small mixer. If it's not that, it's another pedal, another synth, another controller etc.

I may have acquired my final guitar, at least for a good, long while but now I'm also on a quest for a final amp (I think that custom 68 fender is spiffy).

I'm just sick of having a desire for another piece of gear. Once I get the mixer in place, I'll have no excuses for my lack of solo output. The amp is more of a want than a need at least.

Recommend good Kontakt libraries anyone?

After anything for EDM, preferably kontakt licensed stuff. What do you recommend?

Not into sample packs or loops.

Already own Komplete 9 ultimate + Aeon. Preferably in the same vein as Aeon.

Looking for some general help w/ midi

I used to record music back in the 90's and recently decided to

set back up a small home studio using a lot of my older gear (and some a little newer but still years old)

I have a Digi 003 factory mixer with 1x midi in and 2x midi out.

I have an old keyboard controller with 1x midi in and 1 midi out.

I also have an Alesis DM10 drum module with 1x midi in and 1 midi out.

I have no desire to use the keyboards built in sounds.

I want the option to possibly use the DM10 sounds routed analog back through the mixer.

It's funny I've been in sound for 25+ years now but I haven't had to

deal with midi in 15+ and I forgot just about everything about it.

Sorry for the novice question but what would be the best way

to get midi routed in this particular situation?

My terminology might be a bit off but I assume set the keyboard

to output channel 1, drum module channel 10..? Does the drums receive on the same channel 10?

Come out of the keyboard midi out, into the DM10 in and back out of

the DM10 into the 003 mixer?

Or should it go drums into keyboard...or?

I know this sounds like a very basic question I just know as I go to set it up

it's going to take forever even if everything is wired correctly so I'm just trying

to get the wiring side correct from the start.

Once everything gets up and running I plan on using Logic Pro X (hopefully the 003 and everything else works with it)

Thanks

Zoom H4n as USB Interface with Pro Tools 11 - Not Working!

Hi, I am using an Intel Windows 8.1 PC with the latest version of Pro Tools 11. I am trying to get my Zoom H4n interface to work with it, but none of the ASIO drivers I have found for it seem to work... I always get an error saying "Pro Tools hardware is either not installed or used by another program" (and it shuts down whether I click ok or more help). I have also tried the ASIO4ALL driver and that just makes it crash the second you try and load a session.

Has anybody successfully used the Zoom H4n as a USB interface with Pro Tools? I can use my MOTU 828mk3 Hybrid with no issues at all but the Zoom doesn't seem to work at all.

Joemeek VC3 (Ted Fletcher Design) or ThreeQ

Somebody i know offered me either of these at a good price and i won't really have chance to test them out. I know neither are really great but its just for a bit of home recording..

Anyway, Has anybody has experience of these?

I heard the VC3 Ted Fletcher designs are the better ones of the early ones. Also the modern ThreeQ's are really a different company now and completely different circuits etc, just kept the Joemeek name and the green design...

Any idea which is the better option. Obviously the ThreeQ has the EQ section which I'm not too bothered about, although its there if i ever want to. I'm more bothered about it just as a pre amp and possibly the compressor section too. So if you remove the EQ section, which is the better mic pre and compressor of the two?

Moving My Setup to NY

This may be the wrong place to post this, and if it is I can move it, but I'm seeking some early advice. It looks like a move to New York, NY will be happening fairly close to the future (less than 12 months). I live in a nice townhouse in Florida currently with a nice big room I work out of, and don't experience any noise complaint issues, but I'm almost certain NY will be a different situation, at least initially. Potentially less than ideal acoustics aside, is there anyone here who resides in NY (more specifically Brooklyn), and does some or all of there work at home? If so, how much has noise been an issue for you with the neighbors, and how have you dealt with it if there has been? Will I most likely be a stuck on headphones for a year or is reasonable volume/reasonable hour monitoring a reality in NY apartments?

Mix/ DIY master for a client of mine. 2 Track Instrumental and vocals. Recorded with C800G. Please I would like feedback on this if any of you have the time. In my car it sounded pretty well rounded. I played this in someone else's car and it sounded, well the vocals sounded boxy and I was kind of let down by it because I didn't hear it on any other systems. It was recorded in a treated area and mix in one also.Hopefully Im not driving myself up a wall. Anything will help!

retrospective recording is like gambling

I like to use retrospective recording for midi entry, it's just the fastest way to do things for me.

But in Cubase 7.5.3 I often get an error, which says something like No events in the buffer.

That happens especially after a playing a fast passage with lots of notes. If it once appears on a passage, I won't get it done in a second try and I'd have to press record before playing to capture the performance.

In that case it often works to retrospectively capture something short like two notes.

Maybe there is some limited cache size, which deletes the events in the buffer when the cache is full?

It's a bit like gambling, because you never know if your performance will be captured.

Any ideas how this can be fixed?

EZD2 Song construction work with other midi libraries?

My demo has expired and I wonder if anyone knows if the song construction features of EZD2 work with other brands of midi (Groove Monkee)?

I think that is a great feature, but if it only works with the TT midi packs, then it is a bit limited. I am only interested in EZD2 for the composition features.

Best/Fav 25-32 Key USB MIDI Controllers?

Haven't had to shop for a USB keyboard controller for quite some time, and now I'm looking for a compact one for traveling and setting up in small areas.

I'm not even too into setting up knob assignments, but do like having pads if they feel right. My experiences with faders aren't all that great either. In other words, if the controller just had quality keys and maybe good pads, I'd be good.

Any thoughts on the newer and best controllers out right now?

Rode NT2-a and MJE Hulk 990

so i had the rode nt2-a for over 5 years as my main and best LC mic. i like it and i've always been happy with the results. than people began telling me that my sounds sometimes are and were a bit harsh in the highs and after reading a lot of negative opinions here about the highs of the rode nt2-a, i started to look around for a "darker" mic.

the mje hulk 990 cought my interest as beeing a poor mans u87 and it beeing a bit "darker" met my wishes. i bought it. i did some tests between the rode and the hulk in my homestudio: vocals, spoken words and acoustic guitar.

listening to the audio the 2 mics are veeeery similar, the rode just seems to have a tiny bit more meat in the lows and a tiny tiny bit more air. sibilance i didn't notice a difference worth noting.

than i looked at the frequency grafic from my sound samples and they confirmed my impressions: the rode has some +1 db from 100-300hz, +1 db at 7khz and a high shelving +3 db from 9khz upwards which explaines the more air.

but nothing a good eq couldn't align if wished.

so all in all the 2 mics are really almost the same. i can't say the one or other is more 3d or detailed.

what do i learn? never believe the internet. never buy without trying - although that's not always easy ... maybe my ears are not to schooled. maybe i would have to spend more money if i really want a different sounding mic.

in the end: both are very good mics! anyone wanna chime in with their own expierences on both mics?

Advice/Opinions needed for basis of studio!

Hi people!

After thinking and doubting for over two years I have finally gotten my head around and made the decision to seriously start building my studio with some analog gear.

If you would like to know why: The hands-on experience certainly sparks my creativity, i'm really into raw (I love distortion/tape saturation/noise) house/techno and i know that this sound originates from the use of machines, i've always liked to "collect" stuff, and i really like the idea of limiting myself after producing with software for a few years now. I have thought this through :)

Anyway, i have saved up some money over the past couple of months meaning i now have about 1500 euro's to spend on machines. I don't necessarily want to spend this all at once, but i do need some advice or opinions on some choices to create the right foundation for a studio like this.

My current setup is fairly simple:

- A strong Macbook Pro

- A 49 key midi keyboard

- Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 soundcard

- Dynaudio BM5A's

I won't be able to give my room proper treatment for the coming months because i will be living in berlin till next summer and currently live in Spain.

My goal is not to go full analog (atleast, that isn't what i want as of now). I am so used to working with Ableton and i really like the software, so what i would like to do is go hybrid - mainly using Ableton to record/arrange/process and using the main source of sounds from outboard gear. I would, though, like to be able to jam without using the computer too much in the creative process eventually.

Anyway, i was trying to get my head around the foundation needed to make a studio like this, this is what i was thinking:

- A proper mixing desk which will last me for a little while. I was thinking of a Mackie 1604, would this be a good choice? It does fit my budget (They go for around 350 euro's here, second hand)

- A bigger soundcard to go with the desk? - need some advice on this(!) How many channels would i need?

Will this make a good basis or do i need more?

Some things on the wantlist for when i have the foundation down is a tape recorder (Revox B77), a System 1 for the sh-101 plug-out (My favourite synth), Maybe a TX81z and a Poly 800, a 303 clone and some drummachines (RZ1/R70/707). Just to give you an idea of what kinds of machines i'm looking to use in the long run, even though it will probably take months/years to collect all of it.

I hope i explained well enough and would like to hear some advice on building a good/solid foundation, keeping in mind i have a student's budget!

Thank you for reading guys and looking forward to your responses :)

best turntable and mixer setup to play both vinyl and digital files

While I have played around some with digital djing in Ableton, I am starting a new live project with some live instruments but vinyl and digital dj'ing at its center. So, I need a setup that is hopefully not overly complex that allows for mixing both vinyl and digital files (whether digital files are from laptop, USB stick, etc)..

I remember vinyl turntables and software a few years ago that were time tracked just to play digital, but I don't remember if these would also play actual vinyl.

What is the best setup for this? Should I look at a basic vinyl turntable setup and get a mixer that has more channels to include digital files and plan on incorporating a laptop? Are there other gear options out there that would incorporate both? Looking for the most compact version of this setup, if possible :)

Thanks!!!

Keeping Synths/Gear for nostalgic purposes?

Hi all,

I am wondering if people here keep their gear out of sentimental reasons & nostalgia?

I myself have a bunch of gear I don't really use or make music with anymore, but I keep it because of sentimental reasons. I really thought about selling it, but I just can't!

I still have my first Micro Korg that I got as a present from my Dad & a Nord Modular G2 that I bought when I was in college.

What is your story?

Kilo wool curtain

Hi all, my first post here so be gentle. I have built a garden room of wood construction with 3/4" ship lap cladding on the outside, a 4" stud work cavity stuffed with 7" rockwool. Plasterboard on inside and carpeted floor. It's primarily used for listening to music and watching films but I will no doubt record guitar in there when time permits. I haven't measured yet but plan to cover the back wall with three 2' x 4' panels, it's only 7' wide by 10' long. First reflection points are a problem for the left speaker as there are heavy double glazed french doors on that side. Would kilo wool serge curtains help and could I prop the rear wall panels up before fixing to the wall to listen for any differences in sound quality. Sound quality as is, is reasonably good but I know it could be much better.

MOTU Audio Express as standalone AD converter

I'm looking to add a couple of external preamps to my setup in the near future. I'm running a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 as my main interface and the line-ins on it has variable gain.

I'm considering getting an interface like the MOTU Audio Express to use as the AD converter between the preamps and my Saffire Pro 40. How is the AD conversion in MOTU interfaces? Will this yield better results than just feeding the line-ins on my Saffire Pro 40?

Can a Tascam 122 MKII do Backward Tape Effects?

Question for anybody that has or has used a Tascam 122 MKII cassette recorder: Can a recorded tape be flipped over for backwards effects (reverse guitars etc.)?

In other works, are they set up like a 2 track or do you flip the tape over to record on the other side like a standard cassette recorder? Don't want to go back to using a reel to reel just for this purpose but if the Tascam 122 MKII works for this, I'll get one.

How does a company measure the quality of their AD/DA converters?

I own an Avid HD I/O. Avid claims that it has some of the best AD/DA converters on the planet on its $4000 I/O. Before we go any further this post is not about who has the best converters!!!

I'm curious as to how one converter is measured to be better than another. Are there actual hard numbers to crunch to come up with a theoretical "best"? Just as in bit rates how 24bit is theoretically better than 16bit, is there a definitive best converter that science can prove or is it all a matter of taste?

I pondered this question because of the digital element in the equation. Because the converter takes an analog signal and makes it digital, there must be a way to measure the quality of the signal after being converted into digital.

Anyways, to sum it up, do companies say they have the best converters without proof? As in, is it just a matter of taste? Or are there cold hard facts to back it up? What should I look for?

Thanks for your time,

Adrian

Glass partition Dialogue Treatment - Star Trek Example

afternoon all,

Im currently working on a sci-fi short film. Its all set on a spaceship in lockdown, in which a father and daughter are separated by a glass partition. Seeing as all of the dialogue is delivered from behind this partition (in reality its a thin piece of plexi glass) I've been playing around with different treatment on the dialogue. There is a whole pitfall of problems i found with effecting the size of this partition from the clarity of the dialogue to the emotion of the scene and i was wondering if anyone has any experience treating dialogue in this way and good offer any tips?

i recently re watched The latest Star Trek film and there is a scene in a similar setting that caught my ear.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LThIRkpYtI

The clarity of dialogue in the scene in both emotion and intelligibility works brilliantly and i was wondering if anyone has any insight into similar successful treatments?

many thanks!

Using compression on audio book project

Hello fellow slutz!

The recording stage of an audio book is now done. No compression was applied during the recording. Dry signal recorded in a sound booth - 24 bit recording.

I am now doing the editing and post on the project. Edit is pretty much done and next up compression etc.

My question is how do you guys do compression o your audio book projects - do you usually compress already on record stage or all in the post? The audio book I am on now is the Quran and the talent is both reciting and reading the translation. It is recorded verse by verse so: recitation - translation - recitation - translation etc. The recitation parts are about 6-9db louder than the english translation.

Using compressor brings out the roomy qualities of the recording up on all the recitation parts which are hard to eq out without affecting the talents natural sound (he sounds great btw.). How do you guys level out vocals in this kind of situations? My goal is to make the levelling sound as natural as possible.

And just as further info, the whole book is about 50 hours of material so we are talking about long recordings. This is just to say that manual editing is out of question :D

Thanks so much in advance for any help! I will do testing with vocal rider and different comps etc. and will let you guys know how they work but would be cool to get any tips and trick to get started!

Buying a new MIDI keyboard - which one should I get?

(I am sorry if th is is in the wrong section)

Hello gearslutz users.

I am not really new to this forum although today is my registration date. I have simply not felt the need to register until now :)

My job is composing music for film, TV and games and commercials. I actually run my own company and I simply love what I do!

I have quite extensive and expensive gear considering it being just a home-studio. But I still like to keep it simple, and I have not really seen the need to buy the most expensive of every gear I have.

So here's my issue.

First off, my DAW is FL Studio (I know it's very controversial for the film scoring platform, but I have used it for AGES and I guess you know what a pain it is to learn something new..). I have done my research well enough to know that this means complications in terms of controlability with the MIDI keyboard. For instance, I have heard that automap and programs like it won't work like it's supposed to with FL studio.

I am currently doing all my orchestral and piano scores on a full SL-880 MIDI. I am super-happy with this product and wouldn't change it for anything in the world, however as commercials for TV demand alot of EDM styled music I feel that I want a smaller MIDI keyboard that simplifies the process of getting my ideas onto the DAW as fast as possible and focus on the tweaking afterwards.

I have googled alot on this matter and come up with three MIDI keyboards of which I am going to buy one, and here's where I need the advice:

The Alesis VI49 (very cheap - why is that? Unlike the others, it doesn't come with many softwares but I really have all I need when it comes down to that. Will I be satisfied with this one despite the price?)

Alesis VI49 - Thomann Sverige

The Akai MPK 249

Akai MPK 249 - Thomann Sverige

The Novation Remote 49 (this is the one I like the least because of the lack of drum pads, but I am in love with the slim design)

Novation Remote 49 Sl MKII - Thomann Sverige

I guess you can see the pattern that I am going for with 49 keys. That's all I have decided so far, price don't matter too much.

I have read all the details on all these products and still can't make up my mind.... Help please!

i appreciate the month long demo, my album would fail otherwise. i will eventually buy them... pro-ds, pro-L, and devil-loc. i would gladly accept these company's sponsorship should we ever achieve recognition for our efforts.

i already have pro q2, decapitator and primaltap, and i have some other decent plugs too: vcc, the glue, dc8c, satson, elephant, and api2500.

... wouldn't mind some decent eq's, but pro q2 pretty much is all anybody needs, in my amateur opinion.

Decent saturated sound with easily recordable amp...

Hi, all

I already posted this in a Reaper forum, but thought that I could get useful advices from some of you here also, as I slightly changed the way of seeing the problem, since. So, still looking for a decent amp saturated guitar sound easily recordable, I am considering one of these :

- Laney IRT Studio

- Laney IRT 15H

- Blackstar HT 20 Studio head

...or equivalents, eventually. What makes me look to them is that they all seem to have a line output after the full preamp+amp stages, which are both tube driven, this without having to push the volume to a level uncompatible with fair neighbourhood ; guess you see what I mean...

So, does anyone have an experience with one of these or other suggestions ? And how does this kind of recording perform against a full amp+cabinet+mic set ?

Few examples of the kind of sounds I'm after :

- Neil young - 'Ramada Inn'. This one is probably stuck in my mind forever...

- David Gilmour - the intro of 'Shine on you crazy diamond' ('Wish you were here' Pink floyd album)

- Rolling Stones - 'Sway' ('Sticky fingers' album).

Gear already at disposal :

- Fender Stratocaster US, purchased more than 20 years ago and still perfectly in tune.

- Ibanez 'Les Paul' copy, which needs a serious servicing.

- Takamine TAN16C, mainly used as an acoustic one with a condenser mic.

- Zoom G9.2tt guitar board : great for experimenting, but no, 'vintage' saturation is not its main strength...

Budget : let's say 700 € max...

Thanks for any advice or suggestion... :)

Another DAW thread - Specific Question

Hey all,

Black Friday sales got me thinking. I'm currently grinding away at getting to a comfortable technical skill level on guitar, but I'm ultimately interested in writing, composing and recording. I'm as neurotic as I know how to be at this point about sound quality, subtlety, etc, but I'm extremely new with just about everything.

I'm hesitant to simply "jump into" a DAW because I don't want to invest money and find out it's not what I'm looking for. In any case, I've used Studio One before with EastWest instruments and am leaning that way due to its ease of use, capabilities and supposed similarities to things like Logic and Cubase. I currently have a PC.

My question is: Is there any reason not to go for Studio One (probably "Producer" version) over something like the most basic version of Cubase (or Cubase Artist)? I want to be able to use 3rd party instruments and VST's (like EW instruments if I understand correctly), hence my preference towards the non-artist version of Studio One. As of now, with the sale, the Producer version of S1 is the same as the most basic of Cubase. I'm not sure how interested I should be in Reaper, FL Studio or Sonar, but none of them really caught my attention.

Will I be at any sort of disadvantage in the long run, i.e. company not updating, incompatibility issues, etc? Is Cubase or Logic worth spending more on a different computer or worth putting more money towards?

My intended usage will be for recording, composing and mixing genres from metal to subtly ambient tracks.

Thanks in advance, sorry for the long-winded thread!

Mix advice needed for Modern/heavy/rock band

Hello all I've been a long time audio nut/Gearslutz reader, however this is my first post. I have been studying recording for sometime now and am in need of some feedback to help accelerate my growth as a engineer. This is a snippet of a demo I've been working on with my band. This is probably my 3rd or 4th ever attempt at recording and mixing a decent sounding song from scratch myself. I actually recorded this a good while back (before I learned some new key things for the tracking process), but I went ahead and attempted mixing the tune anyway just for practice. I would love any constructive feedback, and or tips.

soundtoys in studio one

studio one doesn't find some of their plugs. specifically primal tap and decapitator.

i also installed all of their demos, some of them show, some of them don't.

running 64bit. in the soundtoy folder on C there's 5 uninstall files.

if i uninstall/reinstall all of them, is that going to affect their license on the ilok because i hate dealing with that stupid shit.

Nrc for 100mm Rockwool 60Kg/m3 + 2 inch gap at 100hz?

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to find what the Nrc data would be for Rockwool 60kg/m3, 100mm thick with 2inch gap implemented in the the panel - total width with gap = 150mm thick, positioned flat against the wall?

I can only seem to find data for 75mm thick panels and no air gap.

How would these panels fair at 100hz - 200hz? I'm currently battling a massive spike at 135hz and sudden deadly drop at 115hz - down to my rooms modes.

The seller claims that the panels have a wooden frame which has some sort of absorption property as to not reflect higher frequencies.

Thanks!

Looking for plugins to add subtle analogue warmth to orchestral and synth tracks

Hey guys,

Before all the Black Friday deals go away, I'm looking at adding some tools to my arsenal to add some subtle analogue warmth to orchestral and synth stuff (mostly u-he Diva). So if it's good for rock/hip-hop/etc, it's probably not what I'm looking for. :)

I already picked up Slate VTM which is really fantastic! Even just slapping it on a master at the very end works some pretty cool magic. Unfortunately I'm not really able to use it on a per-track basis, because even when all instances are bypassed, there's still considerable latency (I'm using DP8). I'm not sure yet if this is a DP8 issue or a VTM issue. I could, of course, just add all the instances once I'm ready to print the cue, but I'd really rather have a template where the instances are sitting in bypass mode ready to go.

Anyway, I'm looking at maybe either Slate VCC or Waves Scheps 73 to throw on individual tracks to add some interesting color and warmth. But I'm open to suggestions. Pretty much my only requirements are:

  • Must be Mac-compatible

  • No hardware required (e.g. UAD plugins)

  • $150'ish or under

I should also mention that I've got the VCC demo, but it's pretty buggy for me. For some reason, when I adjust the various controls in the plugin window, the host (any of them: DP, Audition, etc) becomes non-responsive to mouse clicks and key commands. I have to alt-tab to something else then alt-tab back to the sequencer to kick it out of its locked up state.

Hit me with some recommendations! Thanks!

Basic approach to podcasting

Hi, all. First post, and since I'm about as new as newbies get, I hope I'm in the right place.

Just for fun, and as a way to learn a little about audio production, I've decided to put together a simple little podcast. I'm a software developer and gadget fanatic, so when I started looking into audio equipment, I just assumed I'd instantly get it all and everything would make sense. Turns out, audio is a very different world from what I'm used to.

I'm trying to strike the right balance between economy (it's just an occasional hobby) and quality (IMO, anything worth doing is worth doing well). So far, I've spent some time/money acoustically treating my office, and I've been experimenting with some pretty basic equipment.

The whole digital/analog debate really has me confused (I come from a purely digital world), and I certainly don't want to rehash it here -- especially since I'm doing a podcast which is obviously going to be fully digital. But I'm curious if the type of setup I have going makes sense to the pros.

I'm using a good mic (tried a few and settled on the Heil PR 40), a good and well insulated cable, and a little Mackie mixer which goes to a very cheap Behringer USB audio interface. From there, I'm using Adobe Audition (I work for Adobe) to record, and that's where I'm planning on editing, adding music, etc. Aside from an annoying hiss I can't seem to track down (but that Audition removes nicely), the quality is pretty good.

I started with nothing but a cheap USB mic, and I've been upgrading various components trying to get the sound/quality that I want. I feel like I'm getting close, so I figured now was a good time for a sanity check. Any thoughts, warnings, or advice?

Thanks in advance.

Logic X. How can I bounce multiple external instruments as individual files

Hi, I recently completed a project using multiple external instruments in Logic for the first time. I would like to bounce individual stems of all of the tracks in the project to keep for backup purposes. Is there anyway to live bounce all of the tracks as individual audio files? I've looked at the export and bounce options. Under export I can bounce to individual files, but there is no option for live/external instruments as far as I can tell.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Am I understanding Waves Soundgrid Server right?

I'm not interested in Waves plugins all that much..... however, what caught my eye is them mentioning third party plugins.

Can the Soundgrid Server essentially be used as a DSP system for third party plugs in your DAW? Kind of like a UAD system but for third party plugins?

I've been watching a few videos and reading some literature, and it sounds like that's the case. But I could be looking at it wrong. I know it does a lot more... I'm not interested in it's other features really. But the $450 version sounds interesting if it can offload some CPU heavy plugins to it's DSP. I'm intrigued.

Can anybody confirm if I'm looking at this right?

Summing Mixer and Apple Logic

Hi,

Can someone walk me through incorporating a summing mixer into Apple Logic X? Do I need to send the mixer output into an aux track like protools HD and then to a monitor track or can I just change the input of my stereo mix track to the external sum box input and be done with it?

Reaper Receiving Midi From Controller but Not Triggering Sound?

Hey Guys,

I have an Arturia Minilab here that we're trying to get to work with Reaper.

I have it configured as usual and can see the midi notes being fired in the meters but we're not getting any sound.

I sent a message to Arturia but I don't want to wait until next week to get this working.

I've had no problem with a Korg Keyboard > Midi In of RME PCIe > Reaper. I just need the Arturia to audition patches at the desk.

Not sure what's wrong, but it happens when trying to play Omnisphere, Battery, or Massive.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Metal music high passing

I was reading an SOS article on mixing metal and they stated that they would usually high pass across the board at 60hz~ for fast tempo tracks.

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec0...es/metalII.htm

I can understand why a person would do this, but is it really that typical when mixing metal? Especially with bass fundamentals reaching down to 41hz or below. What is your own approach to high passing and the metal genre?

Emulating 'All-Buttons' mode

Aside from having a plugin that is set up to do this, how might one go about it?

I was thinking the SuperCharger GT would be a good choice, because you have a dialable Saturation stage, as well as the compressor stage.

Any advice on this? Haven't tested it, but I'd think the moderate, or hot saturation mode with the SLAM compression mode, maybe 12db GR.

I am looking to get a Macbook Air with Core i7 or MacBook Pro, hopefully it will work with the newer laptops since it has not been tested according to the website.

Hey Slutz-

I'm a longtime lurker (something like 8+ years.) Anyhow, finally registered....because, because of all the wonderful things you's does.

So my situation. I've finally liberated my apt. recording setup from being a second class citizen to my video editing, that gets the paying work. I'm combining forces with my workspace mate and finally setting up a purpose built music room.

He's donating Mackie monitors and an iMac plus gear. I've got a MOTU traveler and an Allen and Heath Scepter I literally found on the street. The sad perks of artists and musicians bailing on Brooklyn.

Together we've got 3 mono output synths, 3 stereo output synths and V-drums (mono, I believe) plus an assortment of other gear; a few mics, a DI, headphone amp and a few midi controllers. I anticipate recording with a handful of friends with some of their gear, mostly synths. It'd be great to have everything wired up to go for multitracking without having to plug and unplug. I anticipate most of the recording we'll be doing as synths and other stuff direct and probably lower volume monitoring and headphones to not overtly piss off neighbors.

It's looking like 4 mono inputs, 3 stereo inputs (6 more channels) and a couple channels of mic pres. The MOTU could potentially handle this with the ADAT input adding another 8 channels. I don't know much about adat and haven't used it so if more are possible let me know.

Finances are tight. I have been looking for a used 8 channel line level A to D adat interface to run the direct outs of the scepter into. Not finding much except the behringer unit, which I'm a bit hesitant to purchase because of the brand's reputation. Used stuff, aphex 142 and a few other units I researched on here seem scarce on ebay.

The Scepter has 12 inputs, the few channels I checked seem fine. The thing smells like cigarettes and has a few scratches but nothing major. Googling my old MOTU it looks like it's not worth more than 200ish. I think from what I gather from the internet the scepter is worth about 500ish.

I'm not against selling it all for something with a lot of inputs like a midas or allen and heath board with USB or firewire.

I hear Phil Ramone really liked the pres on the scepter and in my non-project band I really love tubes, analog, tape and noisey, garagey stuff. As a bass player I've never been in love with the bottom end of the traveler, it's not bad but a little sterile when I've run a bass or analog synth DIed into it. So the scepter's appealing but until now haven't had a space to set it up and really hear it.

What do you guys think as far as options: some kind of A to D adat from the scepter to the MOTU. Sell both and buy something like the Midas and Allan and Heath boards mentioned above?

Does anybody know where to go in NYC to get the scepter cleaned and checked out if needed?

thanks!

Crystal "alien" sounding synths?

Hey all, I have a project for Uni which is to create our own scores for popular films and i've chosen Men in Black

A sound i'm highly interested in creating is one that features throughout Will Smiths hit - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiBLgEx6svA

It's pretty much that high pitched dynamic tone you hear from 0:13 & during the chorus etc.

I'm interested in knowing what type of waveform it is too, whether its a sine, sawtooth, square or triangle?

My Uni is pretty chill about DAW's and software we can use, at home I have Reason & Logic plus alot of interesting refills too.

Mic Advice - Tenor Saxophone

Hi guys,

I'm working with a tenor saxophonist/bass clarinetist to record a new album.

The genre is a bit slow/dark jazz. You can listen something from our previous record here:

Trigg & Gusset - Kohilo

On this album, I recorded everything with an MXL V6 (which was OK, but not the best ever). That mic is broken.

So I tried some new microphones yesterday, but have not found a winner yet for the tenor-sax.

Some mics in the test group:

- Rode NT1A

Very bright. All-round, but unbalanced. Lack of depth

- RE20

Warm, natural, but seems to miss a bit sparkling. Great on bass clarinet though

- Golden Age Project R1 MK2

Ribbon sound, good low end. A bit dull in the mids/highs.

- Sennheiser MD241

Too much presence in the mid-high regions. Didn't like this one at all.

- AKG 241

Too much 'loudness', lack of mids.

- Neumann TLM-102

Good all-round sound, but misses character somehow.

Do you guys maybe have some other mic advice for recording tenor sax? I want a natural sound with a good low end, but still have enough presence in the mids/highs.

DSI Evolver sysx issue

Hi All,

I have a small issue with the Evolver and sysx files...

I can't transfer sysx files with more than one bank...

Anyone have an experience with that kind of an issue?

Have an idea how to solve it?

or have any idea how to split a sysx file?

I use sysx librarian and sound tower editor, tried with both no success...

Evolver shows that is getting the data (you can see the patches number run in real time) but nothing is changing...

It's not the sysx files for sure... one of them is from dave smith website.

I have attached the sysx files.

tenor sax recording mic

What high-end recording mic for tenor sax? I want full body with natural detail, no edge or harshness. Is a valve LDC that's great for vocals also great for tenor sax? And then what pre? Ideally if I could go direct into my Apollo or an Apogee I could stay more mobile, but I'd consider an outboard pre if it will be significantly better.

I'm a pro sax player in multiple genres, putting together my mobile personal studio, and obviously the tenor sax sound is primary. I've auditioned most of the $1.5-$2k ribbons, and among them I've settled on SE RNR1 as my favorite for body and tone, but I'd still like more detail. I will spend more for the best choice.

I don't want harshness or edge, but I do want detail. If I had to pick a favorite recorded tenor sax sound, one example would be Sonny Rollins on tunes St. Thomas, Tune Up, etc. from the classic Blue Note era.

Thanks for any help

UAD Neve 1073...less usage if not using preamp section?

I was wondering if, like the API Vision, if some functions are bypassed if the plug-in uses less CPU? Like, can I insert just the EQ section, and bypass the preamp, like if I was mixing through the line input? That thing is a hog, and even though I have a Octo, I'm worried I'd be bogged down using a couple instance of it in a typical 24-ish track count session

Empty Rack Spaces

Just wanted to get some suggestions for how to fill a few rack spaces that I just opened up. Would love to find a few rack mountable (preferably vintage) effects units. I make all kinds of music here, but these would primarily be for use with my synths. The two effects units I currently use are a TC Electronics D-Two and a DeltaLab Effectron II. I love both of them, but it would be nice to have a few more things to play with. Could I get some suggestions on cool (and affordable) rack effects units that might be fun to have?

Looking at buying a portable recorder. Help needed.

Hello

I'm in search of a portable recorder to have on me at all times so I can quickly record any music ideas that come to me. As such it would be helpful if it were not too big and/or heavy.

Additionaly I'd like to use it for taking outside to record some field sounds, often in quiet settings such as nature for sampling and use in tracks.

I don't think I'd take advantage of using XLR inputs to add my own mics and would be using the onboard ones more, and aside from being able to do the above I wouldn't require many features, just as basic as possible.

I'd say my maximum budget limit is £150, around the price of a Tascam Dr-40, of which I've heard good things, but I'm not sure if something like this is overkill for my purposes. More more than happy to buy second hand. Any help and best bang for buck ideas are greatly appreciated :) Thanks

Modifying a Jaguar with Baritone neck

Hey all!

Long time lurker, first time poster! Looking for some advice on putting a new neck on my Fender Jaguar. I play in a sort of weird punk/no-wave two-piece and have been playing my Jag with a pair of Baritone strings on it, tuned down to B. i realize this is kind of stupid, but I wasn't able to afford a new guitar and it was the sound I was needing for the project. Well, last night at a gig one thing lead to another and the headstock of the Jag got smashed on stage.

So, now I'm wondering if it's possible to just purchase a baritone neck and pop that into my Jag's body. As far as any mods or technical know-how goes, I'm a total newbie. Do you fine people have any suggestions for this idea? Is it even possible?

I wish I could tell you the exact model of my Jaguar, but unfortunately that information was lost with the headstock at the venue! It's similar to that new Kurt Cobain model Fender released, I believe it was a 2005-2009 Custom of some sort, white with tortoise shell and double coil pickups as opposed to the Jaguar's usual single coils. The neck I've been looking at is the new Baritone Jazzmaster from Squier.

Thanks in advance for any help, loved this forum for a while now, happy to be posting!

Logic...Where are the audio files???

I'm new to Logic.

When I record audio, I can see the audio file in the project browser. But when I click to show the file in finder, there is no audio files to be found.

The only thing the finder shows is the actual Logic project file. Shouldn't there be an audio file folder???

Multitrack playback - any ideas?

So, a client's just asked me to find a solution to live multitrack playback. We need a minimum of 5 audio playback channels running through their own outputs (2x stereo wavs and 1x dedicated click wav for IEMs). The reason for multiple playback stems is to keep the low end and high end of the backing separate so the FOH mix on each night can be adjusted as much as possible without killing any headroom cross the board from a single stereo source.

Also, yes, it must all be stereo as the nature of the panning/leslie type swirling on some of the low end causes some wild phasing issues. We tried the old one track click/one track backing trick and it was a nightmare. As always, the sturdier, cheaper, lighter, more reliable and user friendly the better!

The obvious route is MacBook Air plus audio interface but I wanted to find out if there's any dedicated hardware for this as I have a love/hate relationship with their new Yosemite updates.

PLEASE NOTE: I'm well aware that there are a lot of people out there who see playing to a backing track as glorified karaoke, but please, keep it to yourself. I know that playing backing tracks is not 'live music' but on this occasion it's my job to sort it out.

Cheers in advance! Looking forward to hearing any solutions!

Intelligent Automatic Trim Plug? Exist?

I am looking for a Trim plug in tool that has an automatic volume control. This would enable me to I play with another tone shaping plug in and have it's volume stay the same, whilst I adjust it in real time.

I imagine this Trim tool would have 2 plug in's, and A & B.

The "Trim A" goes in slot 1 of my DAW track. It is a volume sensor with 2 options: Peak & RMS/Loudness match.

In slot 2 of my DAW I enter my plug-in of choice, the one I want to play with, and now without any volume change, as I change the controls.

The "Trim B" goes in slot 3 of my DAW track, it reads the volume from plug "A" and adjusts the volume to match it, in real time.

This will speed up my work flow as i'll be able to hear what I'm really doing, help me with the louder is better issue & stop me from going into the red.

Garageband for ipad to Logic pro X on Mac -Workflow?

i have been a keyboardist since long, just played live and never did any computer music.During past few years,i got the hold of my iPad and started arranging music on Garageband.Things worked well as a hobbyist but then i started getting more professional work for arrangements and then i started working on a full fledged computer.I chose Logic pro x over pro tools cubase or any other because it allowed me to utilise my experience as it looked very familiar and working in logic was almost same.

Now,i face problems when i start sketching an idea on my ipad's garageband environment and then when i enter my studio,i transfer the project to logic.but thats it.i dont know how to move back and forth between the two as i want my project always available..as i keep forging more layers to the arrangement n do tweaking almost everywhere.

What would be the best workflow for my needs.any suggestion will help guys.

Tchad Blake/Bonnie Raitt 'Fundamental' snare sound

I was wondering if anyone would know what it is about the snare sound in songs like Spit Of Love and The Fundamental Things. You can't hear the spring of the snare and the snare is so snapy kind of warm sound. I don't how to describe it. I love the sound.

Would anyone know what it is? Is it the snare itself, the skins, or dampening ( resonant head perhaps) that mainly contributes to that sound?

Thanks

Transcend jet drive lite

Any use for this storage device in a daw? It's basically an sd card which sits flush in a macbook's sd card slot, similar to nifty mini drive etc.

Claimed max read speed of 95 mb/s, read 60 mb/s. Obviously not as fast as a proper ssd, but how does that compare to an hdd? Could it be used as a sample drive? For recording onto? Non daw-related but what about for hosting virtual machine, eg windows via parallels?

Focusrite Saffire PRO14

Well, after all of my disastrous exploits with various interfaces lately, I've finally found one that does the job, isn't ridiculously expensive, is reliable, and sounds good. This thing may not be considered "high end" in an way whatsoever, but the sound quality to my old ears is more than good enough. I have been through a few lately, and had problems ranging from poor sound quality, and units just not working at all with my Mac.

I'm not going to mention any names here, as I don't want or get into any arguments, or give any manufactures a bad rep, we all know that some things just don't work for some people, but this little Focusrite is the bees knees, and I should have got it sooner. Plus, being in the UK I can just call them up if anything goes wrong and actually talk to someone, this is a great plus, rather than have to fill out a support form and wait for an age before you get a reply.

Am I buying the correct thing?

Hi guys,

I'm not new to gearslutz - but I'm definently new to this part of the forum. I've finally decided to stop buying expensive gear until I put up some Accoustic treatment. Please be patient with me as I try to get my head around this.

First I would like to build some panels to hang on my walls. I'm planning on doing the standard method of building a wooden frame to house some absorption material and then cover it with some type of cloth.

So - I live in Australia and I'm wondering if someone could tell me if this product is good to use - http://ift.tt/1Cr6Cx8

I think it's the product that is described under this link (http://ift.tt/Q2aDRy) as "Insulco Tasman Insulation (Australia)". I'm looking at the 32kg m3 100mm stuff.

So I'm a bit confused - when looking at the bob golds link - should I be choosing the stuff that has the highest absorption number for all frequencies?

I'd really appreciate some help...

building a rack PC for live audio

I'm looking at custom building a rack PC for a live rig. running a bunch of vsts, using a USB Maudio fast track ultra 8r.

what I'm unsure about is the best parts to get. particularly motherboard, I want something that is renowned for high quality circuitry and components, for rock solid USB performance with no dropouts, interrupts, cross talk or noise etc.

I'm also thinking onboard gfx, cause I don't want a gfx card hogging any buses or interrupts etc, is that the right way to go?

same with ram, I want something well built reliable and fast.

I've got a Samsung evo 840 500gb ssd, should be good for the hd.

I'm also considering UPS, and power conditioning.

basically I'm looking for recommendations on parts from people with experience building high end performance machines for live audio, who understand how crucial quality components are to a stable and clean sound... cheers :)

Monoprice Love

As this company is moving more and more into Pro Audio, I feel it is worth discussing them.

Last year I was able to recable my studio for about 1/4 or less of what it would have cost me otherwise. Cables that would have cost $20 elsewhere cost less than $5 (often more like $2 each), all rugged construction, and out of approximately 100 cables I only had one bad one in the bunch, which Monoprice replaced with no extra charges or hassle. Beyond audio and midi cables, I've also got one of their keyboard stands in my studio, and it is solid. I also live within their next day delivery area, which means I can place an order and have it the next day by around 9 am for peanuts, less than I'd pay almost anywhere else without free shipping, and much faster.

I've got no affiliation with this company, but I am really impressed with both their quality and service. I've seen that they are making their own monitors, mixers, and effects, and I'm curious if others have checked out their gear. It looks like they may eventually try making synths as well, so I'll be curious to see if they create anything unique or cost-effective.

Advance apologies to the Europeans, as I'm not sure there is much benefit to you to order from them, but for those on this side of the pond, any praise or horror stories?

MOTU 828x

The capabilities of this device seem to be so wide and deep, and effective, that I am enjoying every minute of learning, and wish for more info to study.

It integrates very well with Pro Tools 11. If the computer is adequately prepared, then all things are perfect. Thankfully you don't need Firewire any more. It has so much capability that I feel that I will be really happy and able to push along for a while before reaching the limits of the device.

Motu Track 16 or Focusrite Forte??

Hey Guys I'm new here on Gearslutz and I'm From Puerto Rico, I'm a singer, rapper, songwriter and producer of Urban Music ( Hip Hop,Rap,R&B,Techno,Reggaeton and a little bit of Tropical Music like Salsa,Merengue and Mambo) Ok so I'm in the process of building and setting up my new home recording studio and I'm on the buying my new gear phase. I already got my new Pc, my new workstation table and my main Daws FL Studio 11 Producer Edition and Presonus Studio One Professional. So as for the microphone i will go with the Avantone Pro Audio Cv 12 Tube Mic, My main studio monitors will be the Presonus Eris e5 since I'm going to be working in a very small room and then there's the battle with the audio interface. I'm on a budget and as of now I only record vocals since everything else is done via midi and virtual instruments. Sadly I don't have the advantage of many of you here in Puerto Rico to go to a Music Store like Guitar Center or Sam Ash because we really don't have that here. Anyways I would really appreciate if you guys can help me decide between the two. I know for reviews and stuff that the Forte have the rednet technology integrated and that it's suppose to bring a really great quality of the preamps and converters, but Ive read so many bad reviews and complaints about the forte that it worries me to buy it and have all this problems too. The thing that I like about the Track 16 is all the features but Ive never use a Motu product before so I really don't know what to except out of the Track 16 when it comes to quality of preamps and converters and as for bad reviews or complaints about the Track 16 the only ones Ive seen are people saying that the unit makes a pop sound when turning it on and off and that sometimes when they press play or stop it makes a sound also but there's not a single review of the Track 16 saying all the bad things that Ive seen about the Focusrite Forte like problems with the stability of the unit, problems with the display not working and having to send the unit back, problems with the latency and some other stuff. So please if any of you can help me with this it would mean a lot to me because in a couple of days im going to buy everything online.

logic X automation

In logic 9 you used to be able to hold Shift+Control+Option and lasso an automation lane to put two nodes each at the right and left of the selected area. Am I just missing something or has this functionality been removed from Logic X? I can't see to find it anywhere and it is driving me crazy.

Guide for making drums on the MS20 Mini (+free samples)

Wave Alchemy just released a cool free drum sample pack from the MS20 Mini, put together by our own golden beers.

Here: MS-20 mini Drums | Free drum samples

The big bonus for Mini owners is that gb also put together a very comprehensive guide to create your own drum sounds on your MS20. Kicks, snares, hats, percussion, the whole lot.

There is is PDF you can download, with instructions and patch sheets, and also a series of video's so you can see how it is done.

Here: Synthesize Your Own Drum Sounds! | Blog | Wave Alchemy

I got to play with these recently, and I have to say that this is a must have for Mini owners. I didn't realize how capable the Mini was for creating drum and percussion sounds till I tried the patches.

So you could sample the sounds and put together your own Mini kit, or run each sound live for that juicy analog drum vibe. Lots of possibilities.

Enjoy!

What organ/keyboard is this? (70s Nigerian funk)

Hey y'all,

Anyone know what instrument is used in this song? You can hear it alone at the beginning (starting with the very first notes), and it continues as the other instruments come in.

Is it some kind of combo organ? I'm not super knowledgeable about organs, but would love some advice/theories about this.

Thanks in advance!

Whats a really cheap (but decent) midi controler

Ok, so I actually have a korg digital piano that I use if I want to play stuff in, but it has one problem, no mod wheel. I use lots of virtual instruments (read almost only) and I'm getting REALLY tired of not having a modwheel. So first off, is it possible for me to play the stuff in on the big full keyboard, then go back through only playing modwheel data the second time? Even if I can't, whats the best but cheap controller? I need something CHEAP. It really just needs a working mod wheel, if I could buy ONLY a modwheel I probably would. But yea.

UVI MachFive Biosphere?

Hello, all. I've been lurking for a long time, but am finally making my first post.

I got a Black Friday email from JRR Shop today where I can get UVI's MachFive Biosphere for $40, and get a free copy of their Digital Synsations synths. I was thinking of going for it, but I am finding very little information about the plugin. Does anyone have any experience with it?

For that matter, I'm debating buying UVI's Mello plugin, so I guess what's the consensus on UVI in general? Thanks!

Shouldn't there be a database where we can upload our patches, editors, and samples?

There doesn't seem to be a single place where everyone can put all of our user created resources. They are scattered all over the internet and sometimes it can be hard to find what you are looking for.

At this point it seems like so many people are making their own software editors for their synths, templates for controllers, and have amassed huge sample libraries and patch libraries... It seems like it would be great for our community of music makers if there was open access to that information, so we don't keep reinventing the wheel so to speak.

Suggestions for amp baffle material

I would like to construct about four baffles, approximately 3'x3' to baffle my 1x12 guitar cab for recording. My objective is merely to cut down on the sound level in the room so that I can monitor (while recording the guitar) more accurately.

I realize that no baffle arrangement will silence the cab, but I already record at moderate volume with 18 watt amps, often attenuated. I just want to cut down on the guitar sound in the room and hopefully for others in the building somewhat (this is a home studio).

I'd basically like to make a box shape out of the baffles in order to box in the front of the amp (which will be close-miked with a 57 and Royer 121). This will NOT be an isolation box, just separate panels placed strategically around the amp to cut down (hopefully significantly) on the sound level in the room.

The question is what materials and thickness (Rockwool? 703?) should I be looking at? And any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I found the following thread somewhat helpful:

Thanks much.

Looking for a specific RME device

Greetings,

Im interested in upgrading my RME hammerfall DSP("the old one") with an adat expansionbox so i can get 8 more analog I/O. (1/4 jacks)

I could just get another Multiface, but id rather keep the configuration on one PCI slot.

If im not mistaken there is some kind of original RME adat expansion?

I could swear that Ive seen it either on ebay or somewhere at some point,

but now cant find it anywhere, not even pics?

I hope someone here remembers it better than me

Also if you know a different great product that would do the job,

even though Id rather stick with RME,please share.

Thanks,

Demijan

What's The Best Software To Backup You Daw?

I just upgraded to Acronis True Image 2015, but I heard some bad reviews and one of the end-users said to use Macrium Reflect.

I want to not only back up my entire drives BUT I also want to make a Clone drive that if my OS drive with all my programs ever crashed, I could plug in and be back to work ASAP.

The clone drive should also be able to be used on a 2nd DAW (if I ever build one) that I can simply plug into my next computer with the same components and then be up and running without having to spend weeks reinstalling software, VSTs, etc.

So... has anyone tried these programs? Is there another program you prefer?

Also I see the Macrium Reflect Free addition. Will that make a bootable clone drive as well?

Thanks!

music videos/Looking for a Camera

Hello all. I use a Zoom H6 to record the audio for my jazz quartet. I really like the H6 because it is easy to use and makes good recordings of our rehearsals. I would like to do some videos of the group for promo purposed and use the H6 for the audio. I have the audio end pretty well down, and I have a pretty good choice of mics to use. I know next to nothing about shooting video, but I would like to buy a camera to experiment with. My budget for the camera is around $500. I just need to be able to shoot simple video while integrating the Zoom H6 for the audio. Any suggestions on what camera would do? Also, any ideas on a reasonably easy and economical video editing program? Thanks.

New strings on 4GB

Hi there

I mainly earn my living as a library music composer. I rarely use strings and my only string sample library is Garritan GPO but was thinking of upgrading to something better.

My computer is an old white macbook with 4gb ram (can be upgraded to 5 I think) which has worked fine for me.

How would something like LASS or maybe the spitfire strings fare on 4gb. Is it realistic or is it not enough?

Any thoughts?

smallest possible corner bass traps

Howdy folks. I got some of this stuff left over which I want to use for my corner bass traps.

It is a product they sell in Spain called Copopren made from polyurethane. I have got loads of the stuff left over and thought I could make my corner bass traps from it. It has a higher density than rockwool so I thought I could get away with using less of it as I want to fill my four corners and have about 9 big sheets. The question is, what is the smallest I can make my bass traps using this material? If I go down to triangles cut from 10 inch (250mm) squares I will have enough for all four corners. Would that be too small?

Thanks!

Audio Interface options around £400/$600...MOTU?

A friend of mine is in the market for an upgrade from a TC Konnekt 6 - needing more inputs for some new analogue synths...

He uses an iMac with Logic and needs something with 8 inputs...

My immediate recommendation is RME but around that money you can only really get a used Fireface 400 (what I use) but perhaps its a little old tech...a used UC is around £5-600

In fact the other well regarded options seem quite slim with the MOTU 838mk3 being the next down - any thoughts on that say compared to a Fireface 400? One of the Steinberg interfaces perhaps? Will the M Audio Profire ranges get continued support?

I tend to go by this performance but it shows RME great or older tech like Profire and Steinberg MR816...

Dual oscillator synths recommendations

Hi slutz,

I'm looking for a dual oscillator synthesizer that can take CV and Gate inputs. Around $1000. Preferably less. It doesn't need to have the most amazing bass, but should be capable of a lot of unique sounds. Patching would be nice. It doesn't need to have a keyboard built in, nor have MIDI, but fine if it does. Also, it can't be vintage, but I'm open to remakes of a classic.

I had a Minimoog Voyager and found the sounds too buttery and smooth. Which I love, but I want capabilities for creamy and harsh tones.

I thought about the ms-20 mini and Oberheim SEM. Thoughts and recommendations?

Thanks!!!

Need advice on McDSP plugins

Hey guys,

McDSP's plugins are going for crazy cheap on the Black Friday deals, but as a PT noob/old time Cubaser I'm not very well versed in their stuff but heard a lot of people I respect saying great thing about them. I'm getting the demos and trying it as much as I can, but can anyone shed some light on what's worth getting from McDSP?

At the moment I have my eyes on the Analog Channel, Futzbox and Filterbank. The Retro series is also interesting and very low-priced at the moment. Anyone got some recommendations to share?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

Good acoustics for under £1000

Looking to buy a new acoustic and have a budget of £1000 max would like to get some change out of that but can stretch to it if needs be. Im new to acoustics though so am looking for some advice on what to get, and whats good value for that price. It will need to have some sort of pickup system installed so i can plug it in as i will be using it for gigs as well as recording so i won't always be able to mic up and will have to plug in.

Ive been looking at a few of the more famous brands online Martin, Taylor etc and at the price point I'm looking the back and sides are always HPL which seems a little bit disappointing. For a £1000 i would of thought you would get a guitar made of solid wood especially from a big brand who make guitars in bulk. Although i have read reviews where people say they like the sound of these guitars and that the back and sides don't affect the sound as much as the top.

I prefer 000m and grand auditorium shaped acoustics so if you could recommend some within the price range I'm looking for that would be great.

Any help appreciated,

Thanks

Dual Triode valve/tubes in push-pull circuitry

Hi,

This is my first post, apologies if I have placed this question in the incorrect section.

I have an interest in buying the 6386 Valves. However I have a more general question about dual triode valves in general which is basically...

What makes these dual triode remote cut-off valves ideally suited to push pull compressor types?

I know it sounds a bit specific but I saw this mentioned in an article about the history of audio processing and want to know why they are ideally suited...

If anyone could shed some light on this particular query it would be of great help as searching for a relevant answer on the internet is a bit of a minefield.

Thanks

4 tracks

i was reading a bit about the old dub producers like lee scratch perry and it seems they used too (for good reason) record onto only 4 tracks. seems like he had all his drums/percussion on one, bass on another, guitar/keys on another and vocals on the last. i know technology has moved on so we don't need to do this now but i think it seems a good idea as simplifies everything. in terms of riding the faders live when you mix down it would help i think. does anyone else work like this still?

Slate Trigger vs Logic X internal for layering and replacing

I havent updated to Logic X yet, but I'm wondering what kind of advantages/features/improvements that Steve Slate Trigger Platinum has over the internal drum replacer in Logic X?

In general, how many feel Trigger is best option in 3rd party market, or do things like Drumagog hold their own edge?

Thanks for the thoughts and insights!
