A friend and I have started making some music with the idea to reproduce it live. She's more of an acoustic singer-songwriter type, whereas I've done mostly synth-pop type stuff via software (using a Yamaha DX7IID as my keyboard — I like some of the sounds, love the keys). We're trying to make our aesthetic somewhere in the middle.
She'll be singing and playing acoustic guitar (probably flanged up), I'll be in charge of the gadgets. I'd like to keep it rather simple, probably my Bass Station II and a drum machine (will lug my DX7 out too if needs be). Trying to narrow down choice of drum machine. Thinking kind of a trip-hop vibe.
Budget is around $250. Used ones I see popping up around here include:
Korg ER-1
Alesis SR-16, 18
Akai XR20
Yamaha RX5 (and RX11 etc.)
Various Bosses (550, 660, 770)
Would prefer simple sequencing, easy pattern-chaining (I won't be doing a lot of on-the-fly tweaking). Don't need multiple audio outs.
Any thoughts or recommendations from the likes of the above? Others?
Thanks very much.
